So the Government lost the vote to allow longer opening hours on Sunday. I'm not trying to open the debate but...

Interestingly the Scottish MPs were against it even though it applies in Scotland because it would reduce the premium the Scots earn for those hours

By all accounts, most of the shops don't want it as it would probably cost them money.
They don't think they'll increase sales significantly, certainly not enough to cover extra staff..

I don't think it's really needed anyway - there are always some small shops open somewhere for emergency stuff

I heard that today and it made sense (sales are just "smoothed") so why don't they just decide not to open all the hours they can? It's not compulsory...is it??

So none of you think it ironic that Scottish MPs vote against a change of hours for England when they have the reverse in Scotland !

I just see it as voting against the Government, specifically Cameron but then its not exactly a loss that's going to bring the Tories down

Not overly surprised and to be honest don;'t think it's necessary

I dunno, we have a sainsburys local (petrol station with a decent shop) and its open until 8pm on a sunday. You try and get in there at 4:30PM on a sunday!! Its carnage! People like me have forgotten spuds or milk, bread, beer etc.

Is it sustainable for the large shops? probably not. I in fact like the kids toy shop 'The Entertainer' they do not open on a sunday full stop, Taken from their website:

Sunday trading - You won't find any of our stores open on Sundays. That's because we're part of the 'Keep Sunday Special' campaign. Our teams work extremely hard all week, so Sundays are reserved as a day to relax and spend time with friends and family.

Communities Minister Brandon Lewis moaning about the SNP defeating the proposal - so what's possibly even more ironic is that this probably should have been included in an EVEL bill - and the SNP would not have had a vote on it (though as usual with these things had some Conservatives not also voted against it the SNP vote wouldn't have mattered).

I have to say though - that it is very handy that in Scotland the 'supers' don't close at 4pm on a Sunday - but are open until 8pm (or later) This means we can have a full day out as a couple or family with us not having to structure our day around getting to a supermarket before 4pm closing. Makes for a much nicer Sunday.

I would like to see longer opening hours at the weekend even if it is just spread the load. I work all week, golf Saturday mornings and that means that if I want to go shopping then I have to go in the Saturday afternoon 'rush hour'. That is one reason that I do most of my shopping online. If the high street wants more custom then the shops need to be open when people want to go there.

Pleased that it was rejected.

Working on sundays is grim if you have a family. I do it and I wouldn't wish it on anybody.

Why is our government only interested in increasing the GDP of our country at all costs. It's a stupid number and there are endless negative consequences to it's mindless pursuit.

I would abolish Sunday trading tomorrow given the chance. It's totally unfair on those who are made to do it, and how anyone can think that having shops open on a Sunday will mean we all spend more is bonkers.

From a convenience point of view it has its plus points and I guess shop workers know what they are letting themselves in for when they start work but does it really need extending. Not sure it does
