Hi,

I am on the committee of a reasonably prestigious golf society and am looking for suggestions for some new courses to play. When I say new, I mean some of the newer courses in terms of age that I haven't played. For example, I hear good reports about Bearwood Lakes, Hanbury Manor and Brockley Hall but haven't played any so am reticent to suggest them. Any thoughts anyone?

Our fixture list includes the following for 2010:

St Georges Hill
Buckinghamshire
Hindhead
Hankley Comoon
The Belfry
The Grove
Berkshire
West Hill
Sunningdale
Wentworth
Woburn

These are all lovely and we are lucky to play them but can anyone suggest others that are slightly less well known that offer a first class day out?

We tend to stick to the south east of England as it is where most members are based and hence we get the highest attendance. That said, we are always looking for an event in the Midlands or further north. In the past we have had events at Birkdale, Hillside and Little Aston for example.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Snelly.

My society has played the following in recent years and had very good days out:
Tandridge (junct 6 M25)
Effingham (junct 10 M25)
Ashridge (near Berkhampstead)
The Oxfordshire (near Aylesbury)

Thanks for the suggestions. The committee have rejected the Oxfordshire and Woodhall Spa already. Shame about WS as I would love to go there.

I know Tandridge too - very nice track.

Thanks for the East Berkshire suggestion. Looks interesting.....

I wouldn't recommend Hanbury Manor based on the other locations you are visiting. The off-course facilities are excellent, but the course is only so-so.

Brocket Hall would be worth a look and as it has two courses, you may be able to play both (or a variety of both) in one day.

Depending on the size of your society and whether you do not mind playing in smaller groups, West Sussex is a beautiful course with very good facilities.

Damn my careers advisor, i knew I should have got into the aerospace or defence industries

Old thorns should only be played by those with a nautical persuasion. It is permanently under water.

I played it last Friday, yes it was wet, but I think every course in the South is suffering at the moment with the amount of rain we have had.

Enjoyable round all the same.

Blackmoor,it is in fantastic condition all year round, and welcomes Societies at very reasonable rates.A hidden gem,and rightly in top 100 courses in England. Not far from Liphook,Hankley and Hindhead which are also lovely courses.

Another big up for Bearwood Lakes. Have played it a number of times this year, always found it in immaculate condition and the friendly staff and members always make it a pleasure to visit.
Well worth a trip to Reading for.

Another couple of nice courses that I would recommend are either WestHill or Camberley Heath, both in Surrey. Two great "Heath and Heather" courses that I would love to play again. Woking is nice too, although a bit tougher with lots more heather. Maybe not so good if you have a lot of higher handicappers in your society.

Or how about The Berkshire, again near Reading. Two courses (red & blue) to die for. A good day out is guaranteed there. Not the cheapest, but you all sound like you've got a fair bit of dosh.... ;) ;) ;)

Crowborough gets my shout. On a fine day, must be very impressive (I would think, as when I played there there was zero visibility on the front 9, and I still enjoyed it). Nice heathland course, plenty of variety.

At Old Thorns my trolley was pushing out a bow wave. Never had that before. Also never had the water coming over the tops of my golf shoes either.
