I'm playing with a couple of other guys on Friday, we hoped to be a fourball, but it turns out we're a three.

Can anyone sugest a fun format we could play? Some kind of three way match play sort of thing.....

Thanks both.

I like the look of split sixes / six point scoring.

What is on the plate skins? (If you'll please excuse my ignorance....).

you can only win a skin if you are on the "plate" IE won the hole before. sort of stops one of you playing crap then hoovering up 10 skins when you get a birdie on the first hole you actually compete in 10 holes;)

Ok cool....so as an example, three players, A, B and C...

A and B tie hole 1, so on hole 2, if A or B win it they get 2 skins, but if C wins, he wins 1 skin for the second hole, but the skin from the first hole carries over, which he can win if he wins the third hole. If someone else wins the third, they win that skin and can win the skin from the first on the 4th hole.

Is that it?

no. A&B half, skin carried over so 2 skins the next hole. A&B half again 3 skins on the next, etc . player C wins the 4th (then on the plate) and 5th so gets 5 skins. if hole halfed 6 skins on the next. You can also play double skins on 9 and 18 so adds up to 20 skins in total.

Great - thanks Patrick

Sometimes for a change from the split 6 already mentioned if we are three mid handicappers we play a better ball match against the course with no handicap. Course makes par on every hole, so you need a gross par between you for a half or a birdie to win the hole. Tough but satisfying to win and you're rooting for your mates to make every putt.

Clearly if you are all too good or too poor it is not much fun as there is no challenge or chance of winning.

How about a game of threesomes.....fnarr fnarr.
Seriously, 2 against 1, the higher `cappers against the lowest `capper, or a mixture etc etc.:whoo:

"In the box"
You have to win a hole to be "in the box", then win the next hole to win a point. Person with the most points is the winner.

How about ghost better ball? The highest handicapper plays with a "ghost" player who gets a par on every hole. The other 2 players play better ball against them, with normal handicap allowances for match play. That way holes have to be won with net birdies or better.

How about playing 'stringball'.
You need some string and some scissors for this and everyone plays off scratch.
It goes like this. An 18 handicapper, for example, will start off with 18 foot of string. If his ball, for instance, goes 2 feet OOB, he can move his ball 2 feet and cut off that amount of string without penalty.
Similarly if a putt finishes six inches from the hole, he cuts off six inches of string and puts his ball in the hole as a free shot.
This continues until all the string has been used.
Be careful though, you don't want to use your string too early and you don't want to be wandering up the last with too much string left in your bag!
Remember, 1 foot of string per shot of your handicap.
Just a thought.
