Hello guys,

I know that it's not the best month to play golf, but me and 3 friends were thinking about golfing somewhere in England during a weekend of December.

Since I have never played during that period, can you give me some suggestion such as if it's better to chose links over parkland, or if there are some nice offers for December golf?

I also saw a lot of offers for the Celtic Manor (I know is not in England) but I think in December it's a swamp, isn't it?

Thank you very much for all the suggestions
best
Mak

I've just booked one for February at Formby Hall. Was great value, £89 for 2 rounds, B+B and a 3 course meal, and the course looks great.

Head to the coast, more chance of the courses being playable.

I'd recommend flying into Liverpool and heading up to Southport and playing Birkdale/Hilside/Formby/S&A, its only 30-40 minutes drive from the airport and you should get some decent rates around that time of year.

Could either stay in Southport which will be a bit quiet that time of year, but has a casino or stay in Liverpool if you want a bit more nightlife.

No matter where you go you'll need to get lucky with the weather.

Even as a member i would not recommend the beflry in the summer months but it does come into its own in the winter due to the drainage set up we have. I wouldn't bother with the brabazon as that course drains the worst. But winter deals are in the region of:

One round on the pga + dinner
1 night stay
Breakfast
One round on the derby

Prices are around £99 to £120 for this

Links then heathland are your best bets over winter.

Get down to Saunton, probably one of the best climates over winter. Two courses rated in the GM top 100, and you can get great winter deals. Also Royal North Devon just up the road, another top 100 course. You can play there with 2 fore 1 vouchers. If you stay in the Saunton sands hotel, you will get some good late deals, and you get 10% off Saunton golf rates.

Formby (not Formby hall) have a winter fourball for £200-220( £50-55 each), and believe me you will not be disappointed. That price is just over 1/3 of the summer green fees.

If you can get a deal at Hillside / West Lancs / S and A / Wallasey you will have a great time. They are all within 10-20 miles of Liverpool city centre, and you can get 1 train direct to all of them in about 15-30 minutes.

Outside of Scotland, the area has the best and closest "premier" links courses.

Liverpool is also a fantastic night out and very cultural city.

Nerazzurri or Rossoneri?

Mid December I would give it a miss. Weather likely to ruin the party. wait till early spring, still get the winter deals and you still might be able to feel your fingers on the 1st tee.

I guess it depends a lot on the budget you have. A links course may be better draining than places like the Belfry and definitely Celtic Manor. However that said, plenty of fast draining heathland courses around too.

Like others have said, go to links courses but I wouldn't choose Southport at that time of year. I would go with either richart's recommendation (Devon/Cornwall) or Kent. That gives you a choice of Saunton, Royal North Devon, St Enodoc, Trevose and bit further up, Burnham and Berrow. Or across in Kent you have Royal St George's and Royal Cinque Ports (and Prince's but I'd give that a miss)

Price wise it's a good time to go as you will get winter deals at all these courses.

As suggested by Liverbirdie, Southport coast. The man in your avatar won the British amateur (I think) at west lancs so maybe worth considering.

I thought it was Formby or Hillside he won.

Only a few degrees different on the southport coast compared to Cornwall, I would have thought. Although the long term weather forecast for December isn't good for all of us.

If you do choose Liverpool/Southport there should be very cheap flights into Liverpool/Manchester/Leeds from Milan I would have thought with Ryanair or easyjet. Manchester is only 35 miles away from Liverpool and Leeda about 75 miles away.

Princes, Kent. You'll come of the course cleaner than you went on in December. Think they have a one night, two round, dinner, bed and breakfast deal on at the moment. £109

Formy would be sweet also because Matteo won the Amateur there! Thanks for the hint!!

Rossoneri but not a very good period for Italian football :(

I already planned a trip to Ireland for end of April, don't think my boss will approve having Xmas holiday, then early Spring, then end of April :D

I seriously wouldn't bother, it's too much of a risk with the weather, especially if you'd booked in advance.
Spain or Portugal??

That is a better location for sure, but my other 3 friends are all in England and they were telling me to come and visit, and bring the clubs :D
