Last week our Pro-am got cancelled late in the day after torrential rain all morning never even got started and has had to be re-arranged.

This Sunday Ilfracombe sponsored open looks doomed also, such a shame as so much work goes on all year to put these events on.

I know the British weather is unpredictable but its gutting all the same.

Has your big event survived?

Our major scratch event was washed out back in May the course was in perfect condition and as you say a lot of hard work had been put in for the showcase event. About 6 groups got out before abandonment fortunately it's been rescheduled for sept although not everyone is happy the green keepers had kept the fairways narrower than usual in prep for the new date.

Invitation 4BBB cancelled as too undersubscribed. I think this is simply because we make it too expensive. In my view this event should be opportunity for members to invite a friend (potential membe) to play in a comp round your course - so cost should simply be for the visitors green fee playing with member - so maybe £30 for the day. Order food in advance if you want it. Get loads of folk playing, loads of money over the bar, maybe some little running putting and chipping comps for folk to play in between rounds. Trying to make it a formal day with dinner etc just doesn't do it for me - or clearly many members

Our Pro-Am went ahead as planned on Wednesday. About 5 mins of light rain according to my son who played in it, and who's team of three juniors came second, earning him a prize of Game Golf, and a handicap cut to 13.4..

When my last club extended from 9 to 18 holes, they arranged a Pro -Am and a couple of local Celebs to "christen" it.
The day before, the heavens opened and it didn't stop for 2 days.
Course was underwater for nearly a week......

Second round of the club champs played in monsoon conditions but other than that, all our big events including out ten year anniversary week have been blessed with good weather. Captains Day tomorrow looks fantastic

Drove all the way to Ilfracombe this morning only for comp to be cancelled it was there sponsored Open.

Its a crying shame so much work goes into these events.

Fingers crossed for Burnham and Berrow Wednesday and RND Thursday

All of our biggies have made it but a few have been touch and go.

Got a club match this avo that will go ahead but suspect we are going to get drenched... unless there's lightning

Glorious sunshine here yesterday & today, reports of thunder, lightening and torrential rain around us yesterday and was supposed to be hitting us last night but not a drop!

Basking in the garden cutting the lawns and pottering whilst topless, (pre-match routine) fancy a selfie :smirk:

It was a contributing factor as to why I stopped playing back in 2007. Too many events cancelled due to the appalling weather.

Was always the case that you played the course properly between April - Sep and out with those months you'd be off mats on the fairway or move your ball to the rough and be off winter tees.

In the UK we are seeing some really nice weather in October and March and personally I'd like to see clubs take a more flexible approach and have some comps during those months as well, on the proviso you play off the proper course if the weather permits.

not sure what it's like at other clubs, but no winter comps used to count towards handicap either, which could mean you only really have 4-5 months where your scores would count.

This is a good point, too many clubs are set in their ways working to old calendar seasons which have clearly moved, and yet they still try to ram all the early qualifying rounds to get into matchplay comps and board comps far too early in the "season" when the course and weather is not at its best in April & May, and yet we have better weather (normally) towards the end of the "old season", so, instead of trying to keep to the old season of April 1st - September 31st when we then start to see mats and courses shortened for no reason other than the date, seasons should be extended to take into account the change in our current weather, but then we have that horrible word that some don't like to deal with..........change!

A big band of rain is moving across the country from the south west is going to hit the rest of the country as the day goes by.

The rest of the week is a bit patchy

Well a lot of clubs do most of their main big course maintenance during March and October

It also depends on what course you play - parkland courses get very wet through winter and many get shortened to protect them for the main spring/summer months

The UK weather is the same as it always has been - we are a small island and get ever changing weather cycles

Such a glorious day yesterday and started so well this morning. Went down hill and was throwing it down on the last few holes. An hour in the 19th enjoying a beer and came out and it was warm and sunny again.
