Played my approach to our 17th today the ball finished a couple of inches off the green on the fringe, I walked upto the ball marked it and cleaned it. When I was replacing it I realised what I had done! my partner had not seen it so I call a penalty on myself, cant believe I did it, how stupid!

Has anyone else incurred a penalty in a stupid way?

Yep, same kind of thing but was six inches behind the fairway line (playing winter rules). Realised what I had done immediately I picked the ball up. Idiot.

Happened to me at my old club in our stableford cup where you play 3 rounds and all scores combine for your total points haul!

On 18th green of the last round ball was on the fringe I walked up and really fancied the putt but noticed some sand on my line so brushed it away walked back to my ball and thought oh you absolute prat! Realised there and then I wasn't allowed to do it so called myself on it! Playing partner said they never saw or thought about it but I'd done it so I called it. Ended up holing the putt and missing out on winning the whole thing by a bloody point! Closest I've ever been to a board comp but these things happen

At two under par gross in our open, after 11 holes I hit a drive into the semi rough, walked down, found and hit the ball to the green, only to spot another ball about 5 feet away. It turned out that I had played a wrong ball but one of the same make and number, my playing partners were nowhere near so I dealt with it, played the correct ball, mucked it up and eventually messed up a really great score.

My playing partners said that, had I not said anything about the wrong ball, they would never have known - but I would have and was not tempted at all to do otherwise!

I know the feeling - I made the turn level in the bogey comp on Sunday, parred the 10th, went second off the tee next hole only for it to be pointed out by the third player that we had both played off the yellow - two stroke penalty and lost it after that:mad:

sorry to hear that Louise, it happens frequently at this time of year.

(otoh was it Tommo that was arguing with me recently in a thread that no-one would ever do such a thing...)

Not a penalty but on Sunday I took a casual swing at a 10 inch putt and just clipped the top of the ball causing it to only move about 2 inches.....:o

I can't use the "used to Winter rules " excuse when i did the same as Louise... in Club championships in july!

Spent some time with playing partners agreeing that I could remove the rabbit droppings surrounding the ball, did so, then went to take my putt from off the green and found myself staring at a ball marker instaed of a ball!

Fair play to you mate  Not a lot of people would know that rule including the likes of Rory who did the same thing last year I think in a major comp! 2 shot penalty IIRC

There were two guys I know of from the Medal at the weekend that marked their balls on the fairway then called themselves on it..... After months of winter rules it becomes a bit of a habit and you do really have to think.

Played a par 5 in a medal, when I got to the green and marked my ball I realised it was not my ball. I walked all the way back to my drive and about a foot from my pitch mark was my real ball....

No one knew it was not my ball but what it right it right..

A couple of things happened in different matches of the Matchplay Championship that I entered with Rosecott.

In one match both of the opponents balls were on the green, butone of them had taken about 6 shots to get there. Out of the hole, he picked his ball up, except it wasn't his ball it was his partner's!

In another match I was just off the green in 2 on a par 5 and stuck a tee peg in the ground to lift and clean. I'd been used to lift clean and place on closely mown areas, and this course was only fairways and fringes.
