Why do we do it? Today I was having a decent round. 21 points on the front nine, going along OK at the start of the back nine. Get to hole 14 and after a slightly wayward tee shot find myself behind some trees. And what do I do? Take my medicine and chip out onto the fairway, or try a Bubba-esque hook round the trees in a vain attempt to get on the green but end up dumping it in a ditch?

Why is it that when we're playing well we think we're invincible and try all sorts of cute stuff?

Why is it that despite multiple instances of suffering through bad course management, we never seem to learn?

Because golf is meant to be fun. Hollywood shots are fun. Chipping out isnt. Sitting in the club house describing a miracle shot that worked is fun. Sitting on a meaningless score to anyone other than you is not.

Chipping out is for medals. Glory shots are for everything else.

When behind a tree imagine Sam Torrance stood behind you whispering, "take your medicine sonny". I heard him use it a few times on commentary and it has stuck with me. Whenever I am in the trees, too often, I hear his voice and take heed. I don't want to disappoint Sam :D.

Incidentally, you, me and others do it because we watch too much golf on tv and as they make it look easy we think we can pull it off as well. I felt the same way about skiing the first time I tried it on a school trip. Herr Klammer made it look simple, what could possibly go wrong?

Always have a chuckle to myself when I watch playing partners attempt the near impossible......

In that situation I always ask myself what is the worst score I could make if it goes wrong then chip out sideways as bogey is usually the worst result from doing that and occaionally get it up and down from long range.

Got to look at the hole in the context of the whole round and make sure you eliminate the big number which is a scorecard killer.

Coz we are fick, that's Y.

An at some stage of our golfing careers, we have all done.

fick, fick, fick.

Depends on the situation. A roll up or a meaningless knock after work on my own and I'll definitely consider taking it on and usually will. In a match or competition, get it back in play and take your medicine and keep a big number off the card
