Hi guys,

upgraded my 20 year old gumtree set I got a few years bag over the course of the last couple of months, new woods irons and putter

irons feel great, but my scores have been so so since the change.

im still a beginner so my aim is to break 100, just after new year with the new woods I hit 109 and with my new irons and putter bought a couple of weeks after that I've hit 113 and 116

im still taking lessons, but I wanted a bit more progress than I've seen in the last couple of months - is this all just about practice?

I would say it's down to feeling more comfortable with your new setup.

I remember when I had my current irons it probably took me a good twelve months to feel really comfortable with them. If you have replaced quite a few clubs I would say be patient and see how you get on over the next 3-4 rounds if you are playing regularly and practicing in between.

In short yes. What clubs do you now have? I'd speak to the guy you have lessons with and just make sure he thinks they suit or whether they need the lie adjusting as this will impact strike. Other than that, keep working on the drills from the lessons and keep playing. Don't forget it's still winter golf so courses aren't running and greens aren't always top notch. Try not to chase the 100 score and remember if you treat every hole as a par five you'd shoot 90 and what you pick up on par 3's and shorter 4's you can give back a little on the longer par 4's and par 5's. Have a look at your course management and see where you are dropping silly shots

Course management is something I definitely need to work on. Constantly going for a driver on anything above 250yards is killing my score as 80% of the time it's going out of bounds! Still always tempted by the big dog, but I'm tempted in my next round not to use it and see how it goes

sorry to be harsh but you bought the wrong irons that didnt suit you

Don't put too much pressure on yourself at this time of the year. Your scores will automatically get better with warmer, dryer weather and smoother fairways and greens.

Nope, had them custom fit just took me a while to adjust from what I had previously had as a teenager which were these very large hybrid irons that were great for getting a bit of distance on the ball.

It took time to get used to playing with a thinner club which went a lot further, plus I didn't have the time to commit to a round/practice session every week so I didn't get much opportunity to test them out.

other than perhaps adjust to changed distances there's nothing else to get used to. what's the point of custom fit otherwise?

Yes. New clubs are great, especially if they're a big step up in quality from your previous ones, but they can't hit the shot for you.

It's the golfer that needs to improve, not the golf clubs.
Having nice golf clubs makes improving more enjoyable, and possibly easier if you were always fighting the old ones.

Get a whole set you feel comfortable with, find a good pro to teach you and practise play practise play and fine tune the parts where your games lacking and you'll do fine.:).
