We're planning on knocking through from Kitchen to Dining room and have been getting quotes.

All the builder so far have said we need to get a structural engineer to assess the wall to see if we need a steel and if we do to perform the calculation for building regs.

Any idea how they should charge for this ?

Had one quote that was £800 !

I'm about to start a job and they've just paid £750 for their Structural Engineer.

It's not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things.

We manufacture prestressed lintels and often get asked "if we knock this wall down do we need a lintel and if so what?". At which point we refer them to a structural engineer - I can see now why they hope a phone call will do instead!

The problem is that you are paying for the guarantee that yer house is not going to fall down once it is built/ altered.

many years ago I had an extension done and the surveyor who drew up the plans never did the structural calculations so the council would not pass them.
Three months earlier I had started work at Harworth Colliery and was moaning about the expensive costs of a Structural engineer. I was pointed in the direction of a guy who was involved with the construction on Harworth Colliery Tower/ Castle/ head stocks which recently struggled to be brought down by explosives.
He did the calculations for me and it cost me four rolls of large cotton wool for his daughters new born baby. I lobbed him in enough sudocrem and Milton to last five years.
they are expensive.
