Stroke index on three sets of 9 holes

Hi guys, Im very new to the game and have only started over the last few weeks. Im a very competitive person so I always feel that if Im going to play something, I want to play it properly. But so far Ive had trouble finding the answer to this. Im currently getting my head around stroke indexs and how they should be applied to handicaps and thats all fine.

The difficulty for me comes in that my local course has three sets of nine holes: west, south and east. When you pay at the desk youre told which two of the three you should play on. However, they only have one score card which is issued to everyone. It shows each of the areas, but each nine hole course is given a stroke index of 1-9.

My question is how should this be applied to a handicap of, say, 28. Which 10 holes would a 28 handicapper receive 2 shots on and which holes would only be the 1? Is there a rule of thumb for this? Its possible Ive missed something glaringly obvious though where Im concentrating on 100 new things. What with my new focus on course ettiquette, car park ettiquette, shot ettiquette, clubhouse ettiquette, club use, ball placement, anger control etc lol.

Thanks

Hi Nashy, Do you play at Garons by any chance? I have wondered this as well.... I have found this:

"If you are playing a 9 hole course, then the first 9 would be odd numbers, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 in some order. When you play them a second time, the corresponding hole would be its even counter part. So SI 3 would become SI 4 on the second 9, SI 17 would become 18."

So I would assume you apply the same logic in that front 9 is odd, back 9 even? Looking around for confirmation....

rosecott replied to this thread with the same. front 9 odd, back nine even

Sounds like Garon Park. Used to play there when I lived in Southend :D

Unfortunately I was never a member so can't answer for definite but they must probably have some sort of procedure in place. For a 28 handicapper you'll receive a stroke at every hole and then an extra one at SI 1-5 on each nine. The only confusion will be be when you have an odd numbered handicap as you will need to know in which of the loops where you have an extra shot. Best to ask next time you are in the pro shop.

That's what we did with the last society day we played there....

I reckon the front nine/odd SI & back nine/even SI would be easier to do as a newbie, but the way spuddy describes may well be the correct way.

I asked last time I was there & the pro looked at me blankly like I was mental.....

Thanks for the quick responses, I had no idea Southend would be so well represented on this forum! Yes it is Garons. Also good to see I'm not the only one whose had to think twice about this.

Having only played a handful of times, all at garons other than once, I wasn't sure how common this is in the golfing world. I'll go by the odd/even method for now and report back once I've had a chance to chat with the pro.

Cheers guys
