On local range on Friday and the auto-ball cleaner in the hopper not working properly - left a light coating of wet-ish residue.

Anyway, it made it very clear where on the club (irons) I am striking the ball and it was very consistently slightly (about 1/2 inch) toe-end of centre.

Read somewhere here some time ago, that ideal is slightly heel-end of centre.

Would that bother you? Tried very hard to rectify it once spotted but I really was consistently slightly toe-end.

You'll probably be losing a fair bit of distance out the toe i personally would like to hit it out of the middle and would practice to do that.

Most golfer hit slightly out of the toe, and many modern clubs are designed with this in mind. I wouldn't worry too much.

It is also used as a measure of whether your shafts are the right length, and the lie angles correct.

Were your clubs c/fed?

I don't think you can necessarily 'just change' your swing to improve this very easily.

Perhaps try the new Wilson irons that have the sweetspot in this area of the club- the Di 9s I think they are. As others have said though, could you feel / tell it was an off centre strike as if not I wouldn't worry too much about it dependent on your standard of golf.

Spot on, Most modern game improvememnt clubs do like the Mizzy Mx-100, mx-200, Di9 etc.

Its not ideal mate, but if you cant change it there are plenty of clubs to chose from that will help you.

MX 25s and custom fitted (1/2" longer and 2o upright) and the residue of the green range mat was consistent along the bottom edge of the club. Felt I was hitting them sweetly with the nice deep thud rather than thwack.

I'll take your advice and leave well alone - the flight, length and direction were fine (hasty caveat - by my standards)

There is a lot to be said for this point as many people can play golf year after year and not realise that they are not getting max effect from their clubs. It is one of the many reasons so many golfers hit shorter than other people with the same club when swing etc show little difference between players. You can get a great swing/timing/posture but if you keep hitting towards the toe you will lose distance.

Some get so used to playing like this that they can hold down a reasonably low h/c and often have the overhit problem to contend with when in fact all it is , is catching the ball in the centre for a change.lol.

My first set of clubs were apparently too long for me but as they were quite inexpensive and I didn't plan on keeping them too long I never got them custom fit. I always tending to hit closer to the toe with these.

As soon as I upgraded my irons to a correctly sized set and no longer had to mess around with my stance to compensate I started hitting shots much more centrally and getting much better ball flight and distance.

And this may be why I don't hit it quite as far as I used to with my irons.
I posted on here a week or so ago asking if anybody else teed the ball up on the outside of their clubs when addressing the ball. It's something I do now without even thinking, and despite most of the markings on my irons being out of the sweetspot, I'm sure that my setup position is costing me some yards.
I must make a conscious effort next season to have the ball positioned more centrally on the clubface at address.

This very minor error is much more noticable if you use bladed clubs, most clubs with a wide sweet spot dont let you know as easily as they are more forgiving by design, but even with those, if you are off centre it will have a distance effect by degrees depending on how far off centre you are.
