hi there i was just wondering what everyone considers to be there golfing strengths and also your weaknesses.my iron play is my strong point hitting greens in reg for fun but my putting usually lets me down more often than not in fact i believe if i can sort that out i could shoot really low as im already shooting pretty low as it is.would love to hear peoples thoughts on the matter. ian mc

Putting and short game are my strength along with distance off the tee. I don't play a bad buker shot either most of the time.

Weaknesses are longer iron shots (controlling distance) and accuracy with the long clubs sometimes.

Putting is always consistent whereas the others are all variables.

Putting is pretty decent, saved many a round.

Driving has been terrible, looking better with the ft-i though.

Bunkers are a bit of an enigma, some rounds I can splash out like the best of them, other rounds It feels like I'm in there for days!

Irons are not bad. Short game needs work, passable at the moment.

My strengths are my irons, knowing my distances have really helped this season.

My biggest 2 weaknesses are putting, far to inconsistent.
Concentration is my nemesis. I tend to switch off from 6-9 and 16-18 normally and it costs me. Have no idea why either but if I am on my own, I am fine!!

Currently driving is pretty reasonable-putting ok

however from 100 yds in i am having problems hitting decent shots.

Guaranteed next week the roles will be reversed.

Driving is getting better again, last year recognising the 5 and 4 woods as more important clubs in my bag helped hit more fairways towards the end of the season. Long irons still have the jury out where the mid to short irons I enjoy hitting. My spinmill 56deg is my strongest tool as I can spin it in from anything up to just over 100 yds, 90-100 being the strongest as it seems to be my "distance". Putting is inconsistant like my driving, I very very rarely get the long raker putts that the rest of my fourball seem to get each week. To combat this im trying to get the ball nearer the hole in the first place and am rarely short with my approaches, on saturday I was long most of the way round but prefer this to being 10 yards short and not giving the approach a chance.

What a good thread! and some genuine replies.

My 3W is almost foolproof, but not my driver, have lost a lot of accuracy going from 12 to 10 degrees (+ 1 inch), but the distance gain, with the help of new tech is a real bonus when on song.
My irons are almost sorted, 3 months of video and range trips are getting me close to the "old" dave.
I'm shocking between 40-75 yards, fat ones, over/under hit, you name it, but I've played the "leave a full shot in" game for years now and it's much safer to go out looking for set distances.
Chipping, deadly, always, (short) pitching less good, sadly. Give me a spot round the green without something to go over and it'll be stone dead.
Bunkers, sh**. Can get out (90%) but only have stock shot so really close/far pins are a guaranteed 2 putt.
Putting....Rarely 3 putt but never drain monsters, always too conservative with lag-ups.
Last trip out 60% GIR, so can get under 80 without miracle playing.

Often think that I can really only count my strengths as the shots that will always get picked in a Texas Scramble. That would be my drives and long and mid irons. I'm averaging 60% of fairways and 51% of greens in regulation. But over 34 putts per round. So everything else sucks, I'm afraid. Ho hum. Practice, practice.

My long irons 3 & 4 could be alot better, but then again I dont practice them enough. My short game is my strongest point because I love playing the short shots. Give me a chip anywhere around the green and it will be stone dead. Thats all down to the amount of practice I used to work on years ago and it has stayed with me. I have learnt this year to try and play within myself and not try and knock the skin of the ball, I have found that whenever I try and swing easy at it, it goes where I want it. Knowing what we're trying to do and knowing that we can do it is a great factor. I'm looking forward to my 2 games over the weekend as I have only played 9 holes in the last 2 weeks.

Strength are my 3 and 5 wood, pw,9,8,7,6,5 irons and chipping.
Weakness are my rescue club and driving.
Booking a course of lessons in a few days so will hopefully sort these issues out.

I recently played in a comp at my home course which involved using three clubs plus putter.
I thought that this would be a bit of a pantomime comp but it proved otherwise. As my three I chose driver,5i and 9i,and it really really does concentrate the mind and make you manufacture shots.
Just for a practise round why not take the three clubs you are most uncomfortable with plus putter and see how you go on.

I must be getting negative in my old age (mid 20s) but I would put most things in the weakness column, other than my recovery play. Even that isn’t great all the time. I still manage to get a decent round every few weeks though, so it can’t be all that bad. Must be consistency. I can do everything on my day, but rarely do more than one thing well per round. Driving is dodgy in general, but I can hit a good ball. Long irons tend to be pretty good in terms of connection, but I don’t hit the green. Mid/short irons can be ok one day and absolutely useless the next. Chipping is all down to practice – if I have put the effort in I’m ok, but I don’t always find the time. Putting has always been my weakness, but my 2 thumb grip seams to have helped me turn a corner.

Maybe I expect too much.

I'm great at everything (I wish!!!!!)

Driving is pretty good, although I am prone to draw the club away a bit steeply at times, I reckon I average about 60-65% of fairways, which is quite good. I absolutely love my Cobra LD (and would say it is my favourite club in my bag).

Long irons used to be a nightmare, but since I got my MX-25's these are so much easier to hit and I now have more confidence with my 4 iron than my 5 (which is quite bizarre!)

Mid irons I like with the odd wierd one just to keep me on my toes, but can be prone to thinning tee shots with a mid iron on longer par threes if i'm swinging a bit quickly.

So far so good, now comes the bad bit!!!!

My 56 and 60 degree wedges can be lethal in both good and bad ways, if i'm striking the ball well, I can stiff these from about 50-60 yds and in, however when a bit of doubt starts to creep in, I can fat them, thin them, top them and shank them with the best of them.

I definitely think that 50-70yd shots can either make or wreck my round (any tips gratefully recd).

Fairway woods are very hit and miss and I very rarely use them, and I just cannot hit a utility club to save my life, someone please help!! I thought these were supposed to be easier, I have a ping g5 19 degree and I just cannot hit it!

Chipping is generally okay, but have to ensure that I'm not getting unecessay leg or head movement, but mostly this is alright)

My putter is pretty consistent and has saved me on many occassions, don't tend to sink too many monsters but okay at lagging up, and am unhappy if i three putt more than twice in a round, usually average about 30-33 putts, not prolific but satisfactory.

I wish that i could nail down the consistency, and sometimes a lack of concentration can creep in particularly if i'm tired.

Mmmmmm interesting thread. Sadly my strength and weaknesses seem to fluctuate. At the moment I am not driving too badly but I am not hitting enough greens and my chipping isn't that great. That said I am putting really well and making loads of 6-10 footers.

I've taken steps to remedy my short game this winter and look forward to being a demon around the gree next year. Also just had a lesson on playing those tricky 20-60 foot little shots and have plenty of stuff to work with there.

Happy golfing
Homer

I think it's the 13 clubs in my bag!
I think my biggest weaknesses are focus, concentration and patience.
I haven't been playing a year but still think that because I've done something once I should always be capable of it - the bullet straight 280 drive, 150 iron shot to 6 in., hit the pin off the par-3 tee, hole from off the green, across a steeply sloping green etc. The result is I beat myself up when I don't. I know these should be regarded as the flukes but . . .
Greens are currently my nemesis, though that's down to impatience too. Put in the effort getting there then don't concentrate on the putt! Still lesson today . . .

Definitely most consistent on driving (okay no great distance but rarely miss a fairway). On good days this is backed up by good fairway woods - that's the bread & butter of my game. If they fail I am stuffed!
Recent good rounds are because I have added mid irons to my comfort zone, but now finding 60 yds in to be the problem. Time to have some pitching lessons I think. all the videos seem to suggest a different method and strategy. I also hate practising, but am determined to go out today with only my pitching wedge and swedge in my hand. Also note the strategy of coming in from a distance with a full shot. Ta for that.

I tend to play flops or low runners from that sort of distance Ali.

I like the flop as I seem to have a fair rate of success when it comes to landing it within an achievable putting ditance of the stick. Obviously because of the height on the shot it stops pretty much dead which I like.

When I have a bucket of 120 at the range probably 30 of the balls are used to practise these shots with P S & G wedges.

5 Iron has gone a bit shaky over the last couple of weeks, very rarely use it in play.

cheers - the flop is the one I can't do. Know so many people who do it well! I prefer to practise short game from grass and no real practice area at our club. I'm off to another club with practice ground to give it a go.
