Straw and Rifkind - Politicians in the gutter again

Both these former govt cabinet ministers have been caught out using their positions to try and gain financial advantage but have been exposed by journalists for what they are, both appear to be at least bending the truth if not lying and would appear to do anything underhand for £££.

Are there any politicians out there from any party that forumers actually admire or trust and who they believe are actually in politics to serve the people/their country and not just themselves?

With a general election coming up I can't think of one single politician across all parties who inspires people to get out and vote, can you? Weasly, coniving, lying, expense-fiddling, question-dodging deviants the lot of them!

Hesseltine.

(The late) Tony Benn.

There will be plenty of others, and my gut feel is that more of them would be Labour ones, but the Party machine grinds them down to a large degree!

I do believe, however, that there was a significant amount of entrapment in this incident and suspect The Telegraph is not publishing all the facts about - just those that boost the story!

I think they said something more along the lines that they did nothing wrong according to the HOC rules, which means to me, it was wrong, but our rules allow for us to do wrong.

They make the rules and know how to use them to the best of their advantage.

Bunch of crooks, but crooks that operate within the legislation that they set.

I think the question needs to be asked Why these two. As has already been said re Denis Skinner and others, if you tried it on with him you would of probably ended up with a smack in the mouth.

so back to these two, do they have "history" of being immoral in the past. If you are going to set someone up for a sting, surely you have to be sure that they will take the bait.

Been said before and will be said again, bankers and MPs are predominantly two peas in a pod.

Shows how out of touch mp's are with reality. They can dress it up however they like, just try to convince the masses who have been enduring cuts in their finances for years, that it's all legit. Jack Straw only charges £5000 for an after-dinner speech.

I see Mr. Rifkind has resigned.
TBH and I am sure this will not be a popular view, I think the system is at fault as much as those who exploit it. Would Tony Blair be a multi millionaire if he had never been Prime Minister? I think it is time to ask if we should only allow MP's to have the one job and pay them accordingly to try to attract quality personnel. Even then, it would be very difficult to prevent an ex politician from exploiting his ex position, as Rifkind and Straw seem to have done, once they had left the Commons.
If you think about it, "exploiting" your position or previous position is pretty rife in life. when did you last go to see an ex footballer, cricketer, policeman or even vicar do an after dinner speaking engagement?
I don't think this is such a bad "scandal" at all.
And I do have to say that I am not sure who I detest the most, politicians or journalists. I do have a problem with people setting up elaborate scams to entrap others, going to the lengths of setting up fake websites etc and then outing them as some kind of scum, whilst portraying themselves as some kind of pillar of society and showing people how clever they are. One of many reasons why I haven't bought a paper in decades.

You shouldn't be allowed to become an MP until you've worked for at least 20 years outside polictics imo. There should be no wage, no ability to work for anyone else whilst you are an MP but expenses should be paid and living quarters in London be provided by Westminster...not cash for rent/mortgage payments.

Only from the Intelligence and Security committee, though he has stated that he will stand down at the next election - rather than standing for the 1 more term that he had planned. He has not resigned as an MP.

Of course, once he is out of Parliament, he will be free to hawk his services to whoever! So will be in a position 'to make real money' which was pretty much the statement Cherie Blair made when TB stood down!

For a left winger (I presume) I'm surprised at that part. No wage would stop a lot of ordinary working guys n gals from pursuing politics.......Not a good thing I would say.

I understand your thinking though and its hard to disagree with the rest.
