What strange formats of golf have you come across or indeed do play?

I was introduced to "Perch" yesterday

Totally did my head in at first, especially as you can be playing a blinder and never get on the perch to then have the opportunity to win a hole and gain a point!

In short you have to win a hole outright to get on the perch, once on the perch you have to win the next hole to win a point, that point is never taken off you, as soon as someone else wins a hole your knocked off the perch and their then on it, holes can be halved but you stay on the perch if it was your score that was halved.

Mad as a box of frogs it was but great fun towards the end as its almost like 2 against 1 ganging up on the player on the perch.

What funny or mad formats have you played or come across?

Ive played the format you mention above, but the guy who explained it, called it 'King of the Castle' or something like that. Great fun and can add a bit of a competitive edge to a bog standard 3 ball

We call it Chairman and play it as an alternative to Skins when we are a 3 ball. It tends to mean that someone isn't going to win 6 holes with a lucky bounce off a tree as the holes are not accumulated if not won, 2 or 3 points often being enough to win.

What came across to me on the 16th green when 1 guy had 2 points and we had none but I was on the perch was the other player with no points was out of it if he had putted his par as the guy with 2 points would have won the match as the guy with no points would have took me off the perch, so he needed to miss his putt to give me a chance of winning the next 2 holes to halve the match, which he did and I did :whoo: but it did make me think that could be seen as a bit naughty, he did genuinely go for it, I think

We usually play it very much as individuals. When someone is on the perch/ in the chair both other players will try and stop him getting a point but I've never known one player help another to win

When there's only 2 holes left and someone is 2 points up but he isn't on the perch, the other player who's out of it has nothing effectively to play for individually but will want the match halved to save paying out, thus it can become 2 against 1 in the closing stages

In ours he'd probably have to pay out the other two as he is the sole loser

I'd agree with that, it was agreed though that if 2 scores were the same it was a void match, who knows, I may have not won the last 2 holes if that was the case although the best he could have done was get on the perch on 17 and win 18 for 1 point thus leaving me with none

As I said, it was as mad as a box of frogs but a decent bit of fun.

I played a really weird format with Richart at Cooden a month or so ago.
It involved me hitting every fairway and green, he apparently didn't have to do that.
I don't remember what it was called now.
All I know is I don't really want to play that one again as I hardly ever saw him and he was my guest
