Are they killing matches? Last night with Man City and tonight with Arsenal.

Just seems to kill the game and makes viewing hard work.

Neither challenges were aggressive surely a penalty and a yellow card would be enough punishment. Different for a cynical challenge mind you that would justify the straight red but surely the rules should hand this decision back to the officials.

Sadly both were correct, but the cards are onesided. Last night buscets was worth 2 yellows, mascherano deserved one as well. It seemed what happens on the out field is a foul an arm on the shoulder etc, but mascherano was doing this in the box and it's overlooked?? Tonight, well there are several takes here, there was a player in the box offside ( he is affecting play he may not be involved but he is there) secondly was nano sent off for taking a ball in the same manner in the out field, I.e studs up and at chest height? So why was robin not deemed to be dangerous play? . Okay that's decision analysis over but Martinez committed 2 yellow of fences, you can not break play up by holding a man .. He did that a least twice both times he broke the flow of the game. Therefore yellow card.

Deemed to Be denying a clear goal Scoring opportunity or a yellows it would of been.

The European refs do tend to have a different interpretation then British refs though.

Sorry, you are kidding aren't you? Last night's was a cynical attempt to stop the player getting into the area, tonight's was feet off the deck (albeit no studs showing), bordered on reckless and not even close to the ball. They know the rules, both tackles denied clear goalscoring opportunities. Rather than blame the rules, how about blaming the idiots that broke them?

Exactly that.
And the pundits have the gall to say that the red cards are ruining the matches for the viewers ............. HELLO ........... how about the people commiting the fouls are ruining the matches for the viewers!
The refs are merely doing their job.
They're damned if they do and they're damned if they don't!

Slime.

Indeed. I expect stupidity like that from Redknapp, I thought Carragher was better than that.

1m % correct.

I sat with disbelief at some of the crap the pundits came out with but then if it had been the other way around no doubt the cry would have been 'stonewall red card'.

Jokers and the worst one was the ex international player.

Did not watch the game , are they spoiling the game , yes as it then becomes a one sided game , if in the penalty area then maybe a yellow and a penalty , but rules are rules and it the same for everyone , regarding offside , I think offside is offside , keep it simple not as it is now ............................................EYG

Lightweight, tires quickly, doesn't track runners from midfield, only German that can't shoot, but part from that .....

I only watched the last 30 minutes but immediately thought that Sanago was the laziest player I've ever seen! Just jogged side to side, never closed anyone down, never stuck his foot in, never got tight, Bayern just casually passed it around him and about, OK Arsenal were down to 10 men, does that justify Sanago standing just inside the halfway line not tracking back to help his team mates whilst Bayern overpower them, erm, NO!

I do get a bit brassed off watching 11 against 10, it's about like going to a gig and the lead guitar has to leave the stage because he played a bum note! It costs a fortune to go to football and after, say, half an hour, the ref sends off a player for taking his shirt off after scoring and 5 minutes later for kicking the ball away ( I know! Both his fault and should know better) and often that's the game ruined.

Maybe a penalty goal might be the answer and have a certain goal for denying a goal scoring opportunity and only send off the player if the challenge is wreckless. Finally, have a sending off for 3 bookings if they are minor offences like above and two for bad fouls etc

Just a thought,as I've been to a few games this year where players have been sent off for very little

Depends who's involved, they can still be exciting games.

I'm sure there have been others, although the nature of European football does lend itself to a more cautious game. I don't quite understand the booking for removing your shirt, but they know the score, don't do it.

We have had both centre halves sent off in the last two games, and on appeal the red cards have rescinded.

I personally think a penalty is sufficient punishment, especially when it is because of a foul by the keeper. They are supposed to dive for the ball, and if a striker gets there a fraction before them, a penalty and a sending off is too harsh. Two footed tackles fine, but mistiming a dive, and catching someone with your hand ?

I think modern defenders have forgotten how to tackle and this is down to full backs being more attack minded than defenders if you watch prem players they retreat to 18 yrd line before fronting up attackers . The officials have a lot to answer for these days as you can get a booking for hitting someone with your lace today . Can you imagine Norman Hunter / Tommy Smith / ETC playing now they would not make 20 mins . the Demichalis last night was a very poor challenge and rightly a red in my opinion . The Arsenal keeper tonight was harsh a goalkeeper has to make an effort to stop a goal but the way he challenged him was poor if he went with his hands it would have been dangerous play from Robben as his foot was high normally punished by continental referees . It seems to me you cant be a nano second late in the tackle without being booked now

Unfortunately with the way the rules are at the minute both challenges are classed as "denying a clear goal scoring opportunity" and by the letter of the law as it stands it has to be a red card. But as Gary Lineker pointed out on Twitter earlier, if the ref awards a penalty then that by itself is a goal scoring opportunity and therefore the player hasn't denied a clear goal scoring opportunity so maybe a yellow would be sufficient.

I think the point being made is - should the rule be changed whereby it isn't necessarily a straight red for denying a goalscoring opportunity?

I do think it spoils a game when a red and a penalty is given, especially when it is a genuine attempt for the ball, but is a slightly mis-timed tackle.

The red should only maybe happen if it is an old "professional" foul. No chance of getting the ball and just hacks a player down - i think that should be the criteria for a red card.

I think 90+% of fans that I know, dont like to see a red and a penalty given. The call is for a rule, or interpretation change.

However, with the rules as they are, there is little defence tonight.
