stopping emails

I know I've read a post on here on how to stop receiving emails from threads that I've commented on, but I mustnt of followed the instructions correctly. In layman's terms, how do I stop getting them?

Click on "settings " at the top right of this page
Left margin, Under "My Account" click " General Settings"
Under "Default Thread Subscription Mode" change it to read " Through My Control Panel Only "

Click "Save Changes"
