Stopoff suggestions

Travelling up to Yorkshire this weekend from Kent and was looking for ideas for somewhere about 1/2 way to stop for a bite. Probably going A14/A1M route.

Usually just stop at services but think it would be nice to find somewhere else for a change.

A few miles off course on the west side of Rutland Water but Oakham is a lovely wee town for a short stop.
Some nice pubs for lunch

North of that.........well, it's grim until you get to Yorkshire

If you end up on the A1 in Lincolnshire/Notts, the Reindeer Inn at Long Bennington serves lunch from 12-2 I believe. My old local. Best food in the county. Plus it's *right* of the A1, so no real de-tour.

Other than that, Rutland Water/Oakham area is a great shout.

Just check before you go that they're still doing lunches - It's been over 10 years since I lived in the village! But the owners (Jan and Tel) are absolutely awesome people (as are all the guys who work there). Beer is good, food is good, location is good.

This is what tripadvisor was made for! We do good business with the family boozer being close to a motorway junction, people just look at a rough area and go from reviews!

Dont go as far as oakham. Come off the A1 at the turn for Greetham. The village is 2 minutes off the A1 and the food at the Wheatsheaf is excellent. Could come off a bit further and go to The Finches at Hambleton overlooking Rutland Water. If you do want pub food in Oakham head for The Nelson in the market place
