Hi Daveboy,
Dont take this the wrong way but the best way to cure any problem is go to a pro and get them to sort it for you.

Every one can give you their opinion on what to do and how to cure it but you still need someone to go through it in person.

I mean no offence to anyone in the forum but the pro can go through your whole swing and can advise you on your swing problems on a 1to1 basis.

In the long run it will be money well spent.

agreed, but as a starting point, I bought a driver with a higher loft and a shorter shaft, cured my slice.

a shorter shaft will make the shaft stiffer more loft reduce the slice because it transfers the sideways spin to a bit of backspin(something like that). you might need a stiffer shaft, but first things first make sure your technique is good

This is the kind of thing that can put people off golf……….as above, see the pro.

Wrong grip, wrong driver, too straight face driver, standing too open, falling back off the shot, aiming more and more left-making it worse, ball position, swing path and much more…........see the pro.

davey, you almost certainly have an out to in swing path which means slices or pull lefts, it's the same swing path only the short iron faces are straight/slightly closed at impact and the long irons/woods are open faced at impact.

Some tips - try a split hands swing - left hand in normal position on grip but right hand down the club so there is about 4" gap between hands. Swing like this and you will immediately get the feeling of having to turn the right hand over through impact - try it you'll see what I mean. You want to create the same feeling with a normal swing.

2nd tip watch your hands position on grip especially the right hand, one of those moulded grips is ideal to get position right.

3rd tip is to practice with the right foot about 6" back from normal position, this encourages a swing path from inside to out which will encourage you to turn the hands over through impact and help stop you slicing as long as your grip is correct.

When I first started golf I used to hit a 10.5 deg driver with slice. Now I hit a cobra with 12 deg and its so much straighter, more of a fade

Hi Daveboy.
A real 1 iron is very hard to hit properly, the hybrid is totaly different, which is why they were invented.

I suffered from a block(slice)and i went for a lesson and he said i wasnt releasing the club properly and as a rersult i was cutting across the ball putting the spin on the baal making it go to the right. He gave me some drills to go through on the range and only practice will get rid of it,it still creeps back every now and then. But i know my swing now so i can go back and practice what i have been taught in previous lessons.
You will be surprised at how quick you will get rid of it,just takes a few hours of your time.

Don't forget that a stiff shaft is more suitable for players with a faster swing speed. This article on golf.com explains the ins and outs of it. I once got a second hand set of stiff-shafted DCIs and my local pro said there was no point in me having any more lessons till I got something with regular shafts. I think stiffer shafts also tend to encourage shots that are low, short and to the right - so getting the right flex for your swing could make a big difference.

As everyone else has said though, there's no substitute for having a few lessons with your local PGA pro.

daveboy.....
we can fix your slice.....hang in there!

a few questions
1) do you know what speed you swing it at? (9.5 degree driver is a bit** unless you are up way above the "reg" catagory)
2) are you sure your grip is bang on? do you have any noticeable wear and tear on your gloves?
3) do you know (can you ask a friend) how upright (or not) your swing is?
4) do you practice at a range or course, do you use any alignment aids?

Thanks,

Dave

Re: stop my bloody great big slice please please please

I have just stopped slicing my drives, I found out it was my grip, I was holding the club to far up my palm and gripping the club from infront of me rather than gripping it at a 45 degree angle which now gives me more movement over the club in my wrists.

Right thanks for your interest realgolferuk
1. i think it pretty fast i like to give it a good smack
2. i tend to wear my gloves out pretty quick above my little finger,
3. i think my grip is ok and i do put a club on the floor when i practice so my allignment should be ok
4. i think if anything my swing is a little flat people tell me to get my hands a bit higher at the top.

cheers for your interest lol all!!!!!!

Re: stop my bloody great big slice please please please

A few months ago I stopped slicing my drives. I had only one fault causing most of my slices, it was not releasing my club in time. I was leting my left arm get ahead of everything & causing too much lag & slicing. I now always take a couple of slow practice swings before my drive where I just over exagerate releasing my wrists down to square club at impact before arms get too far ahead. Apologies if I have'nt put it into words better but it works for me like a treat!
