I recently advised a guy new to golf, who was standing directly behind me as I was putting in a club comp, so he could watch my line. That he should not do so in future. Although I was not sure if this was an actual rule or just etiquette.

I could not find a rule on checking. Advise please

Only against the rules (14-2 also see decision 30-3f/13) if he was a player partner rather than fellow competitor. As an FC it falls under simple etiquette.

Just politely ask him to move off your line - ekiteque. I used to worry about asking this sort of thing - doesn't bother me these days. Same if when teeing off someone stands looking down the line of my tee shot or behind me. As an aside I was taught that the default place to stand is opposite the player teeing off.

Why is that? What's the big deal about it, so what going to happen when you get to the tour and you have spectators all around you watching. You going to move them all?

I fully understand it putting but on the tee we usually stand behind whoever is teeing off just to help with spotting the ball. Luckily no one needs to stand behind me as I know it will be bang down the middle ;)

Just past the ladies tee then ;) :D

Because you dont want people moving about in your peripheral vision. Not sure which tour you watch where they let you get that close.

Do you not see the crowds behind players when they tee off ? They are virtually on top of the player

Watched plenty of events where you can get up and personal and I am also privileged to see plenty of pros playing my local and we have a public right of way less than 2 yards from the blue tee and watched a few tee off with people stood behind them and kids making a right racket walking by. No issue at all.
