Hi All,

Really struggling to get my h/cap as the club rule is that you have to play a pre-registered card with another member already holding a h/cap.

The problem I have is getting somebody to do a card with me.

The guys at the club are a great generally. I go out on a Tuesday, Thursday and every other Saturday with different crowds, we have a good time with good golf, excellent banter and a pint afterwards. The problem is that these crowds all play 11 holes only, as do seemingly all the members in casual play.

It has just got a bit frustrating as I am missing medals I would love to be playing in.

Hopefully once the nights are longer I will be able to get the bloke who works for us, who is also a member to do another 2 cards with me as we are never at the club at the same time otherwise but after work could be do-able.

Get an Ad put up in the clubhouse tonight - this can't go on as your wasting your membership, its totally unfair on you. There'll be someone who'll do you 2 cards no problems its just finding them. Had the same problem when I joined.

Yeah tell me about it. If i was you, on my days off, I'd get up there at like 7.00 am and wait for anyone teeing off and just bribe them with a drink or two after or something - you'll find a couple of willing souls before long. Nothing hurts though like seeing the Medal and the big comps slip past when you know you should be playing. What I did was turn up on medal days, find a 3 ball or 4 ball that had had someone drop out and just asked if they wouldn't mind me tagging along to make up the numbers. It was neat because one of them would sign my card for me but I wouldn't have to sign one of theres as I wasnt in the medal so it was a pressure free round, didnt have to think about scoring at all. The obvious thing happened though on the third card though didnt it? Once I got my handicap, I looked at my 3rd card score which I knew was a good un, subtracted my handicap and voila - a score that would have won me the Division 1 monthly medal had I been eligible

I am staggered that guys playing on Saturday only do 11 holes. Why are they paying for full membership? The back 7 must be in mint condition, they don't seem to ever be used!

Jon,

Why not play in one of the comps and mark the card as " For Handicap"

We have to submit three cards, two of which can be from general play but the third has to be in a medal/srokeplay comp and all cards are submitted with 2 for handicap" on them.

Hope you get sorted out soon.

Not sure that 'local rule' has any validity. Handicapping is controlled by the Golf Unions, not clubs. For Scotland (SGU) to put a card in for handicap the person marking the card need only be of sound character and able to count, they don't need to have a handicap themselves and they don't need to be a member of any particular club. Dont know if it's the same in England with the EGU.
However at this early stage of your membership don't know if you want to go hassling the handicap secretary just yet!

Some clubs will let you play in the medal/comp for the purposes of returning cards for handicap. Maybe you should ask if you can do this particularly if you explain you can't get anyone to score for you for a whole round!

I'd go down the route of putting a card in "for handicap purposes" in a competition round. My club lets you do it no problem. As I see it you can hang round the pro shop on medal/stableford days and wait for a drop out (providing you don't have a reserve list), enter the medal anyway (to get a place knowing you can't win it) or put an ad up in the locker room asking for a partner (and giving dates you are free and contact number).

Either way you need to be getting a move on as the best part of the golfing season is coming on the horizon soon and you don't want to be missing all the honour board events (our club stipulate you must have a minimum of 3 qualifying - over and above the cards put in for handicap - to enter our honour board events)

Can you contact handicap sec or someone on the committee? They should find someone to go round with you for a card. I would have thought the pro would also put you in touch with someone. Most clubs are keen to get people involved in comps (aren't they?)Just shout louder?

I got mine quite quickly, I turned up for Sunday matches (whatever format), tagged onto a 3 ball and got one of them to mark my card. If there are a lot of games not on the full 18, I'd put up a card asking if there was someone prepared to play all 18 and mark your card.
The best way is to ask the pro for help.....he should know the good times to turn up or spot spaces in 2/3 balls which he can put you with. You may need to put yourself "forward" a bit more.

can't your handicap secretary help out - mine does. we just call him and leave a contact number and he'll arrange someone to mark your card for you.
If you go round with seniors it will be a lot easier to arrange.
