Just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this issue....

I have an old Callaway War Bird 5 Wood, with an original Steel shaft in it, and its a very reliable and very powerful club, at least for me.
Easily 220-230yds, and a very penetrating flight.

Now, as we all do, I'm occasionally tempted to change it for a Titleist fairway, but as they dont do a 17*, I might try the Hybrid 17*.
Judging by how I find the War Bird with Steel Shaft, I think I'd go Steel again, anyone else prefer Steel ?

I think I do, I have a steel shaft in my 3 wood and love it.

Have you got a place near you to try it out?

I thought I was the only person who thought this! I've got a TaylorMade Raylor (Reissue) with a Dynamic Gold True Temper R300u shaft (I like to be exact) in it. It's suberb, total control, easy to shape, and I can hit it very low. I will only ever have graphite in the driver. Not that many rescue clubs are available in steel: a gap in the market me thinks?

Robobum : Dont have to......our 2nd is 250yds slightly dogleg, and I hit the green with my 5 regularly.

Very powerful club, maybe i shouldnt think of changing !!

I was hitting my 5 wood between 235 to 250 so took it out of my bag as i hit my 4 utility 220 to 240 if you hit a driver 280/290 then a 3 wood about 255/260 so a 5 wood 230/240.

Mike you hit your 4 utility 220-240?
You know that a 4 utility is the same as a 4 iron?

These are tour player average yards

Driver 295-320
3 Wood 250-265
5 Wood 230-240
2-Iron 225-235
3-Iron 220-225
4-Iron 210-220
5-Iron 195-205
6-Iron 180-190
7-Iron 165-180
8-Iron 150-170
9-Iron 140-155
Pitch Wedge 130-135
Sand Wedge 115-120

You boys are good! You'd be hitting it further than me AND getting 7 shots :D

Especially good, considering the time of year & conditions at the moment to be hitting those sorts of distances.

I know its probably a sign of getting older, but I really would rather it were a little warmer than it is right now.

EDIT Getting back on topic, I like steel headed fairway woods & have been tempted on a number of occasons to dable with a steel shaft. A mate of mine at work always uses steel shafted fairway woods. He swears by them.

Although I've got graphite shafts in my fairways and hybrid I always had steel in them in the past. Best fairways I ever had were Callaway Original Steelhead 3 and 5. I've got a 7 wood with a DGR300 and I can pop that 210 on the fly - SC2.5 measured!!

The problem stems from the difference in flex between shaft manufaturer. As has been said before there is no industry standard for shaft flex so Fujikura's regular is probably different to Aldila's. But a Dynamic Gold R300 steel shaft is going to have the same flex no matter what clubhead its in. And as most manufacturers use the DG shaft you know how its going to react before you hit it. Same can't be said for graphites.

Not strictly true, as you can step it to make it stiffer, and you can stuff it into a bore thru head to make it tip stiff, but in general you aren't far away with this assumption.

Hang on Hang on.......talk about 'artistic license' ?????

I didnt say 'on the fly', or even that it was 'at this time of year', did I ???
I'm talking for the majority of 'my' golfing season, which is April - October.

As far as Tour Averages are concerned.....well my distances are alongside, just to show I arent trying to masquerade as Paul Casey ;-)

Driver 295-320 Me 245-275 depending on if I 'middle it :-)
3 Wood 250-265 dont carry one.
5 Wood 230-240 210-230
2-Iron 225-235 dont carry one
3-Iron 220-225 200-210
4-Iron 210-220 185- 195
5-Iron 195-205 175 - 185
6-Iron 180-190 160 - 170
7-Iron 165-180 150 - 160
8-Iron 150-170 140 - 150
9-Iron 140-155 125 - 140 soft/hard
Pitch Wedge 130-135 110 - 125 soft/hard
Sand Wedge 115-120 54* - 80-110

My irons are 1* strong, so my distances are no bearing on how you should or do hit your own irons. - as long as YOU know how far you it them ! :-)

Anyway, this is all going horribly off track, thx for comments on Steel Shafts everyone, seems I arent alone :-)

I use to like my steel shafted cally steelhead + but to be honest I get more control with my graphites. Maybe its a sub-conscious thing now I've been using graphite shafts for a few years or maybe I really do hit my graphites better. Either way I know when I'm on the tee or playing a wood fromthe fairway that I have supremen confidence that I know where it is going when I hit it. If it ends up in another postcode it was me and not the club
