Morning, just joined the forum after reading your exploits over the years, I've subscribed to GM on and off over the last 8-10 years.

i was reading the rules section of the mag and a question popped into my head, as it does. I then had to join to ask it!!

So, you're playing in the monthly medal and you hit your properly marked ball into the rough, on finding it you then find another identical ball that you'd hit there earlier in the week. Same ball, same markings. Both have line of sight to the green and neither is advantageous with distance.....what do you do?

And just to confirm that it's not impossible to do so....

A mate I play with uses a unique marking and has twice found a previous ball, while looking for the current one, that I know of! Not on the first though, as any ball not easily visible will be in abundance of water that surrounds the hole!

Since it's been answered...

Yeah we know it can happen but to add that they'd need to be found at the same time (after all what player/s is still looking for a ball after finding a ball of the right make/model and with their identification on it in the right area!)

It's more likely the player has found and played a ball and then discovers the 2nd 'identical' one

What's the penalty now?

Wow ya deserve more than 10 for that 1..

My ,what i see as a logical take on this (not official)

You are still in the position of having to determine if you played the correct ball or not ..

You would have to check the ball u just played & if need be mark, lift & carry back to where u just played & compare the 2 balls to see if they are indeed identically marked ..

Now if you still cannot determine which ball is the correct ball you are again back to lost ball & back to the tee , except now when you hole out you have to add penalty for playing wrong ball to your total for the hole

Just my take , NOT official as stated

See Decision 12-2/1 which indicates that a player who plays a ball he has identified as his own has played a wrong ball if an identical ball, which he cannot distinguish from the one played, is subsequently found in the same area.

The Decision concerns a ball which has been identified by make model and number only. I would like to make to make it different for a player who puts an individual identifying mark on his ball and allow him to continue with the first one. I cannot, however, find anything to justify that. It's just my nice nature . ;)

So working backwards its as bladeplayer suggests, its a wrong ball - lost ball- replay the original shot from tee/previous position

Ouch
