Rather than the Monthly Medal today it was a Stableford Competition.

The troops were a little unhappy when a relative new member of 2 years playing off 21 had a score of, wait for it, 48 points FORTY EIGHT POINTS. That is taking the proverbial.

Think he may get cut!

The other month someone came in with 50 points playing of 27. They are now playing of 14 after various cuts thank god. :D

48 points by a high handicapper is a pain in the proverbial but by no means extraordinary. At my old club, if you wanted to win things you regularly needed 45+. Doesn't mean he's a bandit, just had a very good day. Next time out he'll probably get 25.
And he probably will get cut for today's performance.

Agreed.

In a friendly a few weeks back I scored 45 points and was being called all sorts. Two days later I played in a Satbleford comp and came in with 30 and got 0.2 on my handicap.

Everyone can have a good day, and getting heavily knocked for 1 good performance can end up being really discouraging tring to play to an unrealistic level too soon.

I agree that it was probably a rare golden day and the handicap system will take care of him accordingly. To be fair, our competitions are split into divisions and so division 1 (0-12) and division 2 (13-20) are normally won with a maximum of around 41-43 and even division 3 is normally the same mark although there have been the odd 44 or 45

That's playing to 9! :)

If it was up to me, I'd not just cut him lots, I'd cut him to straight to 13.....that'll see the end of anything over 40 points in the future.

My best was 42 points playing off 18, though comp 4 days later, could only manage 36 points.

Was a member of a Stroke Anal website, they had a leaderboard, which was a comp for a Driver, now people were putting in scores......wait for it, 57 and 61 points

I emailed the guy who ran the site, told him it was a joke, he had nothing to say about it, so I am no longer a member of the site.

:D

In '97 I won Captain's Day at the club with 40 points playing off 11.
Next day in the roll-up I came dead last with 23.
Good one day - rubbish the next.......
Sums up Golf

Stableford is designed for high handicappers and these scores happen week in week out you just have to accept it and wait for the medals

I played in a medal a few years ago and shot -2 gross, won nothing. Best gross but 8th net. no gross prize. Never played another medal there

I have a question for you knowledgable chaps out there.

Played yesterday in a Stableford comp. Facts are I play off 28 now (27.5 before yesterdyas results). I scored 27 points, and did not record (lifted) on 6 holes and scored an 8 on another hole. Therfore I only completed 12 holes or more to the point, only scored on 11 holes. Average points per scored hole is 2.45. Which if I'd played a bit more consistently, would have given a total haul of 44 points. Potentially!

Now, I'm aware the consistency is a high h'cappers biggest problem. However, bearing in mind that I can occasionally play this game. What would be my likely h'cap reduction had I scored 44 points?

With this talk of high points for high h'cappers, I'm almost certain that one day I'll come in with a high total, and be called a bandit. Which brings me to my next question. In your opinion, leaving egos and pride out of it (I won't be offended). Bearing in mind yesterdays potential. What would you play me off if I was to rock up at your gaff?

I obviously struggle, but at times I can play this game and I'm concerned about being labelled a bandit when it does come together. Or should I really not care and have my one day of glory at some point?

Thanks for your help.

PS I would have started another thread, as this could be a bit of a hijack. But I thought it was relevant to the OP.

If you had 44 points it all depends on the CSS of your course. But say the CSS is one below the par at your course then with 44 points you would be cut 2.8 shots. There fore you would be:

27.5-24.7.
Hope that helps.

Bet you only posted that coz you knew Smiffy was away for the day.

Just you wait 'till he gets back !

( How come noone else picked up on it. Does that make me a bad, sick, dirty person :o )

Obscene can be done by anyone though I agree it is usually the higher handicappers that have the occasional day out.
I managed 28 points for 9 holes in one of the last of the winter competitions of the winter season this year past.
6 birdies (5 in a row from the 2nd hole)a bogey and two pars. One guy had 25 or 26 points and was amazed to find he came second. Still, It helped bring my pro shop account back towards the black.

It's not just high handicapers who can have a good day.

In last week's medal (SSS 69 and CSS 68), there was matey playing off 11 with a net 62 sitting in the clubhouse thinking that the prize was his. A while later, in comes another net 62 this time from a 5 h/capper who won it on countback. (That would have been equivalant to say a 42 points on Stableford). The phrase "chicken and eggs" comes to mind.

But oh! what might have been. If it hadn't been for the 2 lost balls off the tee, 1 drop out of water and 1 drop for an unplayable ball and 3 mid range putts that did the horseshoe and stayed out, my net 68 could have been a lot better and I would have worn a sombrero with pride.

The problem with stableford lies in not just the area that points to outright cheats but to many golfers who for one reason or another do not maintain h/c properly.

Who is to judge the fairness on that. Well, I dont know, maybe its just impossible to police?

I will play stableford but not if it means going out of my way to do so, Ive seen too many very high scores take the winnings from more deserving players in my book.

One example is a friend of mine who plays off 15, he played the best golf he has ever played (I was with him at the time) he shot 85 gross, the only people to better him that day was a 28h/c player who put in 46pnts and a 24 h/c player wo posted 48. I myself scored 32 and thought I had had a reasonable game of it?

To me , if your h/c is 28 and you are capable of such a score, you should not be off 28. Once you are aware of improvement you should not always wait for someone else to cut you, you should request it yourself.

Played in Vice-Cap day yesterday, we went out at 0712 as it was the only slot available and after about 13 holes of rain and totally wet through the comp sec walks over to us on the 18th green and states it will be a 9 hole comp as loads havent turned up and the ones that have are not teeing off whilst it rains, the worst is that my playing partner did well and scored 46 point off 28 but because its a 9 hole course they only took his first 8 of 20 points which is pretty average, I played pretty poor on the first 9 with 11 points :o (I was half asleep and hungover) and picked up 19 on the way in.

To me , if your h/c is 28 and you are capable of such a score, you should not be off 28. Once you are aware of improvement you should not always wait for someone else to cut you, you should request it yourself.

lol I might ask to be cut myself. I thought the only way to be cut was by playing in Qual matches?
