St Mellion / Woodhall Spa

St Melion - one great course and one ok course

Woodhall Spa - not played there but understand two great courses

St Melion is ok - had good three days there - just shame the Kernow isn't same standard as the Nicklaus

Nice hotel , good food and beer is priced well , nice place to take the OH too

Both have 2 courses, both have accommodation (onsite or across the road) and both take forever to get to!

Woodhall has the better main course although St Mellion is tough as old boots. I guess the deciding factor should be your location and the standard of golfers in your party. St Mellion can get very wet though so I would avoid winter/early spring.

Woodhall Spa The Hotchkin just for the sheer depth of the bunkers alone is worth the trip. Left hand bunker on the 12th, you must have a go.

St. Mellion for me, Woodhall is very good but tough. St.mellion is a beautiful course.

Probably more to do of a night if Plymouth is close enough.

I do like St Mellion. Good Hotel, food and a nice spa, the Courses are both interesting and the Championship a great test of golf.

Dartmouth G&CC also has a great course and good Hotel.

If someone said to me "right, you have to choose one course and it will be the only course you can play for the rest of your days", then that course would be the Hotchkin at Woodhall Spa.

Both venues are good, but I think as an "experience" St Mellion just shades it for me.
I personally think that Woodhall Spa has got too many bunkers, and I'm not saying that because I found lots of them, I only went in a couple!
I came away thinking that you could take at least a third of them away and it would still be a great track, but some of them are put in just for the sake of it.
A very nice course although there are plenty I have played elsewhere that I could say are as good.
St Mellion on the other hand is a course that you will come away from thinking "Wow". But as others have said, you have got to get it in the right condition.
It's difficult to explain, but it intimidates you.... I don't know if it's because it's built around the side of a hill, but everything seems so big, it makes you feel tiny in comparison. It's the only course I've ever played that makes me feel that way. The 2nd and 12th in particular. I don't think I've ever finished that 12th hole, and I've played it loads of times....
It is a brute of a course. There isn't really a let up all the way round.
Both of them are a bit of a hike for me to get to. But if I had to choose one, and was guaranteed decent weather, I would be heading for Cornwall.

Having lived in Plymouth and played both courses at St Mellion many times, and now living in Lincs and played both at Woodhall many times also, there is only one answer. Woodhall Spa every time. Especially as the OP gives his location as Norfolk. The courses at Woodhall are both great but very different. St Mellion is all about the one course (and I'm not a Nicklaus fan when it comes to course design) and one run of the mill mediocre at best one.

Looking for a weekend away at one of these two venues, not sure where to go would you kindly give you opinions on the venues please.
You must only be a couple of hours to Woodhall, St Mellion must be over 5hrs from you. For a weekend away is there a max limit on travel time?

Given how many good reviews I hear about St Mellion I must get down there at some stage. I have only played one Nicklaus course and I loved that.

I was just about to say the same- Norfolk to Woodhall is reasonable, but St Mellion is good day of driving.
I live northwest of London, and thought we would never get there!
