Is it really as tough as it looks on their website?

I watched the course flyovers and usually a course will have a few tough holes, but it tends to look easier on the course map/flyover...almost every hole looks brutal. The thing that concerned me most is that it looks like loads of blind shots and I am playing it for the first time, on my own.

Perhaps a caddie and 20 balls? Never have taken a caddie before, but I assume it would help

Any advice?

Yes it is tough. Weather dependant, it is an absolute brute of a course.

On a calming day it is really playable and very enjoyable.

Blind drive on 3 (don't hit driver and stay left)
Blind 2nd shot on 6 over the himalaya bunker
Blind drive on 16 as long as you carry 250 (all feeds down to the right)

Like any coastal course the weather plays a huge part - I have hit driver, 7 iron to the par 5 1st and also had to hit 9iron in for my 4th shot with the majority of the field unable to reach the fairway from the tee.

Regardless, its a fantastic spot to play, generously wide fairways and minimal rough make it enjoyable for almost any standard.

I played it years ago with my father in law.
Was a wet day driving over - horrible weather on bodmin moore - then it was quiet and sunny on the course!

the course was hard work but thoroughly enjoyable as long as you don't mind the tribulations of links golf. Lots of blind shots to contend with.
See if you can pair up with someone else as it would be less arduous if someone else is there to help you in case you go offline.

There are some 'evil' holes alright - including the first if it's breezy. Plenty of forgiving ones though.

On a fine day, it's a joy to play, with the view of the Camel Estuary - and its pleasant aroma - and Padstow village and harbour. Like most links courses, requires a light breeze to be 'interesting'.

Can't remember what times of year I played it, but rough never seemed to be overly long - awkward rather than penal.

It is a stunning golf course. I played in their open on Sunday which is off the blue tees, some of them are 50 yards further back from the whites. What you don't see on the flyovers is all the undulations, some of the fairways are very lumpy and you also have to be on the correct side of them to have a shot to the green. The shots into the greens are also extremely difficult because a lot of them are either raised up or have run offs all the way around them. Add to that the width of some of the fairways and you are playing a lot of 2nd shots from the rough.

It's in fantastic condition right now and the greens were very true on Sunday. It is the first competition I pencil in every year, I wouldn't miss this one for anything.

Which one's are tight D4S?? I can only think of 10 (If you choose to hit it onto the walkway that mascarades as a fairway round the huge mound) and possibly 6, because of the fairway slope??

Good knock down there btw ;) you must have challenged someone for that pound note again!!! :)

The tight ones are 1, 2, 4, 6, 10, 14, and 18 (all off blues where they have them) as on some of those holes the angle to the fairway is different from the daily tees. 6 and 14 in particular you are driving diagonally across the fairway from the blues and on 18 if there is any wind into then the landing area is between the two mounds at the start of the fairway

Played well in the morning, nice little 0.4 cut although gave back 0.1 in the afternoon, all in all it was my best knock of the year to date. Bit of confidence coming back into my game, soon be back down to Cat 1 ;)

Dont talk to me about St Enedoc!! its still a sore subject.......had a weeks holiday in Polzeath last week but was banned from taking the clubs........

Could see a couple of fairways from the harbour in Padstow and even drove past it on the way into Rock......was itching to go and play it......6 hour drive there and 6 hours back and didnt even get a sniff...........mind you the surfing on Polzeath beach made up for it a bit.... #radical!!

Thanks guys, I was already looking forward to it, but now even more so.

A question I have is when you cant use a mobile phone (which I use as a GPS sometimes), and you are playing by yourself, how do you know which line to take on these blind shots? How do you normally handle that?

Rick, just read your post...I admire your self-discipline! I am going on a family holiday as well, but that area sounds like a golfing heaven, to good to pass up.

Seeing as I cant surf I will be playing St Enodoc, Perranport and Trevose in that week

Buy yourself a course planner.

Blimey, you really know how to rub salt into a wound.

If you're going on a family hols then (assuming you like food etc) take them to Nathan Outlaw's restaurant in Rock. That should give you a decent position when starting the discussion about golf etc.....

Drive4Show and Robobum...the 2 of you should be the hosts on the Fear Factor! Abandon all hope! haha

Thanks for the advice, I will get myself a course planner, a bible and 40 balls and that should do it

Fantastic course. I've only played it once and loved it.
Started to front nine in calm sunny weather but by the 4th the rain had started and it was blowing a hoolie!
If your playing off 18 or under you'll have a great time, 18 -21 it's enjoyable and over 21 it can be a bit of a chore.
Pop in a see Nick in the pro shop, he give you all the advice you need and have a putt on the green at the front of the clubhouse as it's more like the church course green than the one by the pro shop.
Have fun.
