The hype of the Open happens to co-inside with the time I'll be making my university choices, St Andrews was always in contention as it has a specific course I am looking for but it is impossible to ignore the fact that the University is situated a 2 minute walk away from the R&A. I'd like to know more about the golfing opportunities of students there so if anybody here has studied at or knows anything about golfing as a student in the area, please chip in.

Does the reduced membership price that applies to residents also apply for temporary residents of the town such as University students?

Are amateur golfers welcome to play on the courses there?

Yep any amateur can play the course as long as your handicap is below 24,

with thy regards to membership have no idea sorry

In this months mag Fergus states in his tour of town he went to St Andrews and bought a student membership for £80 I think obvious was a few years ago now!
Best check with the links trust of the uni website to see if there is any up to date info.

I'm pretty sure there will be some sort of Varsity event that happens. These usually take place between two local, 'rival' universities. We had ours (Coventry University) with Warwick. Played as a sort of Ryder Cup style event.

Make the most of your time up over the border, especially if you've got so many amazing links courses nearby! (That's what student loans were invented for )

As far as I'm aware students are entitled to an annual season ticket that covers all 7 courses. A mate of mine went there about 7 or 8 years ago and it was under £200 a year.

You either get a full links ticket or restricted links ticket. Restricted tickets can't play the Old or Castle courses.

Prices this past year for students were £200 for full and £110 restricted. It's pretty much the best value golf on the planet, so make use of it while you can!

As said above though, the links trust or university can answer everything.

Good luck with uni! Just a little aside, I'm at Manchester Medical School and we have an intake of around 125 medical students per year from St Andrews who some down here to experience our top notch clinical teaching in the later course years!

And once you get to know a few it's surprising to find out how many play golf. Also, they tend to slip easily into the playing standard of clubs having built solid foundations on the school of links!

I was there from 1993 to 1998 and back then it was £75 per year for a student membership that let you play any of the courses. Really used to annoy the American visitors if you got paired up with them on the Old Course when back then it was £50 per round for them to play it.

Would highly recommend it as a place to study/drink/play golf.
