I was told my understanding of how Stableford points are calculated is not correct. Does SSS affect, on which holes a player receives extra shots? I thought that if a player has HCP 10 and plays a course with SSS 70, she will receive extra shots on 8 (= 10 - (72-70)) holes with stroke index 1 to 8. I was told this is not how it is done. Could anyone make it clear please?

no she'd get a shot on holes 1 to 10

Standard Scatch Score (SSS) is used to calculate initial handicap and also against supplementary cards and self adjustment if needed.

Stableford points are calculated against par, SSS has nothing to do with it. You then compare your stableford points to SSS. So off ten you would receive shots on 1-10 but then you would need 38 points to be level with SSS if it was 2 shots below par

So, the buffer range is adjusted - e.g. if the buffer was 33-36, it would be 35-38 to maintain the handicap, right?

If you are maintaining your own handicap then work it out agaist SSS. and yes if Par is 72 but SSS is 70 then you need 38 pts to be level par. so 35 - 37 is buffer for a cat 3 player

Remember that if you are playing in a competition it CSS you use not SSS for any handicap calculations. Th holes where the person receives strokes remains the same.

erm ...? What is CSS?

It's quite simple:

Standard Scratch Score (SSS) is the score a scratch player would be expected to score under normal mid-season conditions.
Competition Scratch Score (CSS) springs from the proportion of players in a competition achieving buffer or better.
For a course with Par 72 and SSS 72, the approximate proportions and resultant CSS are:

46% and over = CSS 71 (37 points)
23 to 45% = CSS 72 (36 points)
16 to 22% = CSS 73 (35 points)
10 to 15% = CSS 74 (34 points)
6 to 9% = CSS 75 (33 points)

Less than 6% =CSS 75 (33 points) (Reductions Only)

That sounds to me like you are unable to know how your handicap will (or won't) be adjusted until all players finish the competition. But otherwise, I think I get it, thanks for that info!

Indeed, which is why some think it is the work of the devil (try a search for previous threads on the subject!)

Otherwise it's really just a way of factoring in conditions on the day (weather, pin locations etc) to take into account that these affect the difficulty of the course. CSS can only go down 1 shot as compared to SSS but can go up 3. Depending on your course it may yield more pleasant surprises than disappointments.

that's why I love playing a course with a SSS of 73 over a par of 72. An extra invisible shot to play with in every competition off the whites!

And just for fun if the scores get really bad the CSS goes up by more then 3 and the comp goes into reduction only mode and all over handicap score don't count as far as increases are concerned.
