Squat, Spring and Swing: A new breed of power- Rory

A bit like the Bubba one I posted yesterday... if most players tried this they would be all over the shop IMO... the top players are so good at returning the face at impact that they can pretty much do what they want to generate power... wouldn't suprise me in 50 years if there is something completely new to generate even more power and keep the same accuracy(Happy gilmore anyone?).

word of caution for the 'athletes' thinking of giving this a try out ... don't try to squat by independently or intentionally just lowering the butt, or over bending both knees or through lowering the vertical head height.
if you do you're more likely to gets all kinds of miss contacts, dump the clubhead in the ground, get the arms/club stuck a ways behind. or try to independently raise the hands coming into impact so then more likely to flip, bend the left arm up at the elbow so blade it, toe it all kinds of bad stuff even whiff it entirely.

the squat only appears as the left knee is re-rotating towards target after the initial pressure in the left foot triggers transition which moves the left thigh momentarily (in milliseconds) away from the right leg which is held in place momentarily (in milliseconds) so the gap between the knees expands so causing the much now talked about 'squat'.

good golf swings have always involved ground pressure
you can go back & look at old footage of Sam Snead to see this happening back then. Snead was an all round athlete of his time a great baseball player, football player (not soccer) played both games at a high level.

hands have always in a good motion moved downwards with the clubhead above them as the right shoulder/chest moves downwards too in the downswing from transition towards impact.
but as the left-side of the pelvis turns & clears the motion also moves upwards some, left chest, left shoulder also then turning left & upwards pulling the left arm upwards so the hands pulled upwards as the shaft & club head is then propelled downwards & forwards & left, into & through impact then left & upwards as the whole right-side moves downwards forwards & through.

old fashioned physics, gravity, friction & Sir Issac's 3rd.

Hmm. I'm very skeptical of these types of video, drawing lines all over someone's swing doesn't tell the complete story. Looking at a 2d interpretation of something in 3d and then interpreting the 2d result back into a 3d action without taking perspective, projection and optics into account will give you the wrong result! Basically what I'm saying is that what looks like a translation movement in one axis is actually the result of rotation; the camera lies.

I'd love to do some motion capture of a top golfer's swing and map it onto a 3d software skeleton. You could then show people how they're moving differently in 3d. With the advent of good virtual reality systems on the horizon you could then compare what you're actually doing to a pro, whilst standing within the virtual body of a pro golfer. I think this could be a great teaching aid.

In fact, why have I written this idea out loud?

Anyone interested in funding this experiment, get in touch. ;)

zepp golf app 2 does a simple portable version 3d model you can view on cell or tablet. Keegan Bradley using this zepp 2 fits on the glove system in his practice work.

or there exists this kind of fuller system. swing guru golf. looking at their website they have one in Scotland in Glasgow.

huddersfield and Birmingham is all i can see on their website

if anyone is thinking of the introducing the move that will produce the squat have a look at the pelvic screening tests on the TPI screening thread. all of it's relevant but in particular re 'squat' what is being said by Dave Phillips from around 10' 32".

I was doing this 2yrs ago, but not as good as Mcilroy I hasten to add, with my then coach who now is in Shropshire.

As The Coach has said and I agree with, its not a 'squat' as such in the exercise form, bending knees and lowering the butt. It's a connected stable base with the ground and using the force from the ground up, at the start of the downswing the left knee and hip 'slightly' separates away from the stable right knee maintaining the distance between the 2 knees but With rotation as the left knee goes towards target and the hip must rotate around and back and not slide left and up, then rotate. I'm not great at explaining it but I understand The Coach's post with the arm extension at impact, a bit like a tennis player serving, full extension.

Its not easy to do and it is explosive. My present coach has got me away from that but I think I'd like to revisit the squat, spring, swing again.
