Bit early but surely McIlroy favourite this year.
However can he take or qualify for a UK national comp like this now he's opted for Eire in the Olympics - maybe he's only eligible for the international award instead?
Would seem a little odd if he won this UK SPOTY award then in 2016 won in Rio and stood on the podium under an Irish flag with A Soldiers Song playing out.

Any views or too contentious a topic?

He is eligible for the SPOTY and certainly will be one of the favourite

Hardly early, McIlroy is already more than a 5/1 on favourite and theres hardly any big sport events left this year (bar the ryder cup). 2 Majors and a WGC a great year for him.

Not gonna get into the politics side but as far as im concerned hes British and will be a more than worthy winner of the award in December

yes, he won't win it

Lewis Hamilton or a sentimental vote for Johnny Wilkinson the dangers according to the betting (ie not much danger)

Yeah had a look at the latest odds - Carl Froch up there also but at the moment nothing beats Rory's achievements

By December, Hamilton will be all over the news either for winning the F1 title or for crying non-stop about something or other like he normally does, and will hence pick up all the sentimental votes from the idiots who phone premium-rate lines to vote in these things.

Not been a vintage year for individual achievements. It comes down to the usual BBC hype and who it decrees to push in their trailers. If we win the RC and McIlroy has a good competition he should win but it's not a given

Who do you reckon will ?

I don't care Phil!

It used to be one of the highlights of the year and rewarded for outstanding achievement coupled with personality, now it's down to who has the best media coverage or appeared on a reality TV programme for exposure.

when has it been about achievement, its the sports PERSONALITY of the year, the beeb will fix it again to have the winner they think should win, they tell you who to vote for even if you dont think any on the list is good enough,i think it will be a disabled sports person this year.

I can never understand how people can say it's fixed

The ten nominees are decided by a panel of 12 with sporting achievements fully in the criteria

Then the public vote for the winner

It's very rare when people who should be on the list miss out and then it's a public vote
