Just thought I'd post this for info. I just tried to send some shoes back to Sportsdirect as the shoes which had a 1 year warranty for waterproofness starting leaking. Anyway Sportsdirect didn't want anything to do with it and said i need to go back to the manufacturer. I'm pretty confident this is incorrect so i was about to log a complaint with the Retail Ombudsman. Apparently Sportsdirect is not responding to communication from the Ombudsman so a complaint is a waste of time. So in future i won't buy from them. I know they've had a bad reputation but you'd think they would have improved by now.

I bought trainers from sports direct for the gym.. the girl on the till told me that I wouldn't be able to return them if I didn't like them I would only get store credit in that event

That's their policy , think it's actually within their rights to do so.

When shops struggle first thing they cut back on is their returns policy's

Yeah i think if its not faulty they don't have to give a refund. Companies often do refund though such as Argos

Yeah big reputable companies normally do

Sports direct give such high discounts I think it's the way Ashley works because he wants high profit margains

Fair enough I guess

I know when they bought direct golf ping pulled out of direct golf and didn't come back because they won't deal with him

I like that they told me upfront so I had a chance to go actually I'll leave it

Iv always found my local sports direct to be pretty good with exchanges.
Regarding them not taking stuff back and dealing with the manufacturer, Iv had this on several, occasions from various places, my local golf pro being one of them. Same as most places tbh. Once they have your money they aren't interested.

But that is against consumer law as set out in the Sales of Goods Act. Your contract is with the seller, not the manufacturer.

I've never had a problem taking stuff back to the store, even a pair of spikeless shoes I wore all summer where the sole started to come away. If you've got a store near you try taking them there before you go down the legal route. As has already been said, your contract is with the retailer and if the goods are faulty they must put it right.

Wife bought me the Dunlop Biomimetic 500 shoes for Christmas, 1x black pair and 1x white pair... both came apart after a half-dozen rounds at the same spot, with the heel separating from the sole. Local SD couldn't have been more helpful, couldn't replace as discontinued line and no stock so gave me credit against some Footjoy Greenjoys.

Guess it depends on who you speak to on the day - although it shouldn't really - but keep trying.

I know they don't give cash refunds, as others have said - they'll only give you in-store credit instead. Shady company but we all keep shopping there because they're cheap ultimately!

Yes they are shady. Probably ok to buy cheap shirts, shorts etc but people shouldn't buy anything which is liable to go back, so shoes, clubs etc.

I just got an email from the ombudsman:

"Thank you for contacting The Retail Ombudsman.
At present there are no laws to force retailers to engage with us, it is therefore their choice.
Sports Direct are one of the few retailers that do not engage with us and therefore you will need to contact Citizens Advice to consider taking legal action against Sports Direct"

Looks like small claims court then

It's not worth the effort, just don't buy there again and spread the word of more shady customer service

Actually, a small claims court cost is maximum £100 to file, but a warning letter informing SD that you will pursue a small claim case is enough for them to buckle as it's too expensive to run a court case for a big company rather than just settle. Win win.

Maybe, depends how much you've spent. My shoes £60 so clearly not worth it. They will lose more in bad publicity
