Playing in the summer with titleist DT solo in a bounce game and hit a drive that I initially thought I hit well but made a funny sound then had a wierd trajectory into the rough. My PP said he thought he saw something fly of it.

Sure enough when I get there the ball had split with the core showing and part of it missing. Was a ball I had found, old man said must have been a fake.

What's the ruling here in competition?

Ball can (must) be replaced - with no penalty. Shot still stands though.

At what point does this part of Rule 5.2 come into play Foxholer?

If a ball breaks into pieces as a result of a stroke, the stroke is canceled and the player must play a ball, without penalty, as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was played (see Rule 20-5).

The description in OP sounds good enough for me.

Doh! My blunder!

I was searching for the definitive ruling - but looking under 'Stroke'!

As you post, Stroke cancelled. Though it's 5.3.

I think that refers or certainly comes across more as a result of the ball breaking up into pieces at impact and not going anywhere of any distance!

Ignoring what I just posted, if the ball still went some 200yds for example, and you saw the ball was spilt when you got to it, do you have to return to the tee and play again, can you not replace the ball their & then?

That's what you must do - substitute another ball. As the 'breaks into pieces' condition hasn't been satisfied, merely the general 'unfit for play' one.

It's the 'part of it missing' that satisfies the 'breaks into pieces' condition.

I would say if the ball splits into pieces (ie you get to the ball and it's no longer in one piece) then you return and play again, if the cover is split then you replace the ball and continue.

It flew low right about 100 yards, the main ball was in tact though practically halved with the White outer holding it together, when put back together was a small chunk missing. Maybe a 10th of the ball? So replay from the tee?

Yes.

The difference between the ball being in pieces (however many or of what size) and a ball simply damaged or unfit is that with the latter you have got a complete ball that can be replaced where it finished; with the former you would be unable to determine which piece and where to replace the ball. So back to where you came from.
