So was playing Saturday in a four ball, just a friendly game so not in a comp.

My ball was on the green but on my lie it looked like someone had done a 360 and made a mess of the green.

I know I can't repair it but was moaning about it to one other chap, he then went over and repaired it.

Now I know I would have had a penalty for doing so, but he said it was fine as he did it, is this right ??

If so, can you have an agreement with your fc, that your will repair any spike marks on their line ( if playing a bouce game )

Cheers

P.s even after his help I 3 putted from 5 foot

Well, I never knew that the rules of golf were different for bounce games.

I was going to quote Decision 1-3/3 but, for some reason that needs investigation, it does not appear on the USGA rules website.

Ok, I said a bounce game, as in not a comp, I play most weeks just for fun, now while I stick to the rules, the best of my knowledge, if anyone else makes an error I don't call a penalty on them,I just tell them the rule breach.

Such an agreement would get you both DQd for agreeing to waive a rule.

Decision 1-3/3 to which rosecot refers said that specifically but has now been withdrawn as it simply duplicates the decision below and Rule 1-3 itself "Players must not agree to exclude the operation of any Rule or to waive any penalty incurred."

[h=2]13-2/36[/h][h=4]Competitor Sanctions Repair of Spike Damage on His Line of Putt by Fellow-Competitor[/h]Q.If a fellow-competitor purposely improves the competitor's line of putt by repairing spike damage, the fellow-competitor is penalized under Rule 1-2. If the fellow-competitor's action is sanctioned, tacitly or otherwise, by the competitor, is the competitor also subject to penalty?
A.Yes, under Rule 13-2, for allowing his line of play to be improved.

Yes, but, bounce game or no bounce game, you were suggesting it would be OK for collusion in getting around a rule you didn't fancy having to be applied to you. Where would that end?:

A FC removing loose impediments from your ball as you were concerned you might move it?

A FC holding back the branch of a tree to make your swing path better?

I'm sure there are lots more.

The forum has had this conversation before as to whether all the rules should apply irrespective of whether it's a comp or not.

You can do whatever you want in a 'bounce' game.

Edit. To clarify, if your not playing an official game of golf ie. A qualifier, match, competition etc. then you are not 'bound' by any rules. For instance, you could play two balls, have a practice in a bunker, smooth out a spike mark, give yourself a 'preferred lie' etc etc. You dont need 'permission'.

I wouldn't be very happy if there was money at stake and another group were setting their own rules.

If there's money at stake in a swindle etc then you would be following the rules of golf. In ours, the only things we do outwith the official rules are conceding short putts within reason and negating the need to go back to the tee for an unexpected lost ball (to save time). These rules of our mini comp are made clear to everyone at the start of the year. The OP was talking about a fourball with his mates with nothing at stake.

I'd have no problem with that if, as you say, all the rules exceptions are agreed and made clear. Having never heard the phrase "bounce game" until I started using the forum, I wasn't sure if it included swindles with more than one group and prize money.

 It's a football term. When I played sunday football, if the originally scheduled opponents called off we would try to arrange a 'bounce' game with another team for a bit of practice.
