Myself and a few mates head up to Aviemore every October and our annual trip is fast approaching. We play a number of courses all over the region including, Boat of Garten, Dornoch, Grantown, Nairn, Hopeman, Elgin, Blairgowrie, Moray to name but a few.

The last couple of years we have played Spey valley, but the green fee is quite expensive and the greens have been beyond shocking. The first year was just after they were tinned, so we accepted it was just bad timing, but last year they were absolutely awful. We really like the course / scenery and the challenge of the holes, but unless the greens are improved we are thinking about giving it a miss considering the plentiful number of alternative great courses up there. Has anyone played it recently that can comment on the condition of the greens?

I played there Sat before last and they were good, Looked terrible, but then they always do, but rolled nicely and were true.

Let me put it this way... they were better than the Greens at Royal Dornoch on Saturday.

Cheers. Interesting that you say they were better than Dornoch. We played both last year and Dornoch's were perfect (in the majority), but Spey's were just terrible. Maybe worth another risk... Probably find out when they are planning their winter maintenance.

i imagine they will do it in the next few weeks. everyone else has. Nairns were done 3rd week in Aug.
Dornochs were Verticut, Ive no idea why they were so slow, it was like putting on treacle .

But as i said before, you can't expect to come to the highlands of Scotland and expect the courses to be tip top in October.

I completely agree. There is however a happy medium between "tip top" and unplayable and when you are paying in excess of £60 a round at Spey you expect the greens to be OK.

TBH, i wouldn't pay more than £20 to play Spey Valley and certainly not in October, let alone £60, luckily my round was free;)
