Anyone got any experience / recommendations with paying for a speech writer?

(I don't know if it's just today but the amount of banners and ads on this site is making it painfully slow)

What is the speech for? A wedding?

If so, don't do it! Just be personal and write down what you think. People don't expect Jimmy Carr when listening to speeches at weddings!!

My experience also...and not just today I'm afraid - a necessaery evil as they pay for the site

Had to do this for a living often to multi-language audiences via translators.

3 parts to a speech
1.Tell 'em what your going to tell (short intro. possible a funny story - be careful using jokes good idea to make fun of yourself rather than others)

2. Tell 'em. Main part of the reason you're speaking. (Remember that most people's mind wanders every 10 minutes so you need to include something lighthearted every 10/15 minutes).

3. Tell 'em what you've told 'em. Short summary of your main message or a toast. Thank your hosts if appropriate or welcome your audience if you're the host.

When telling jokes, funny stories don't rush be careful with your timing so practise in front of mirror.

If you use notes (Powerpoint slides) only put 4 or 5 points on a slide.

Imagine all your audience is sat on the toilet it will reduce any nerves.

odd you should write that, but when I was taking my first aid instructors training we were initially taught to use the "news" method of teaching.

1, tell what your gonna tell um,( brief bullet points).
2, tell um
3, tell um what you have told them

seemed to work a treat.

did a father of the bride speech a couple of years ago. Part of the speech I said. Quote, If I was to give one piece of advice to my daughter it would be to let your husband finish what he is trying to say before interrupting. I continued, Me and Missis T have been happily married for 30 years, at this point both Missis T and her best mate jumps in and shouts "it's 31". Everyone laughed. I repeated my let your husband finish quote and continued. In total, we have been married for 31 years, but that other year was a year or arguing, shouting, kids, families, money worries etc that was not so happy. It is that one year that if you get through that, the others will be happy. Missis Ts face and her pals was a picture. The place erupted with laughter.

When you know your other half as I do, you just knew she was going to interrupt.

I started my best mans speech with -

"Well this isn't the first time I've risen from a warm seat with a piece of paper in my hand", waited a moment and continued with "well I hope this goes okay, I tried it out at the old peoples home down the road", paused a moment before continuing with "they all seemed to like it as they all pissed themselves" First got a few laughs, polite more than anything, but the second had people roaring and some with did he just say what I thought he said looks on their faces.

It settled my nerves
