Hi All,

I am looking for a failry special course to play a round next week on.

Without straying to far from topic, for the last couple of years me and my dad would play a round of golf around our birthday (both on the same day next week) but after him unexpectedly passing last year, this year I will be playing with my Step Mum and Step Brother as it would have been his 50th. So to 'celebrate' we are trying to get a round at The Grove.

I am coming from East London / Essex and they are coming from Aylesbury, so Watford seemed to fit well, but as a back up plan does anyone else have any recommendation between these two locations, for a really good golfing day out?

TIA,
Craggles

Brocket Hall be a reasonable option sort of midway between you. Woburn worth considering (albeit closer to Aylesbury than Essex).

Enjoy your day wherever you play :)

Based on their website, Brocket Hall looks a lovely place, and certainly better located than Woburn (Didn't really want to go further than Aylesbury) but both websites clearly state official handicap certificates needed to play; this may cause a problem for us nomads

Craggles, my brother in law went to Brocket hall for his "stag/golfing" weekend 2 years ago. None of them have certs. They all play regular, but no certs. When they called to book, Brocket hall said as long they have all played in the past & are an "acceptable" standard they are welcome.

That rule of certs is more to keep away the "lads stag weekender". The beery hackers basically.

Give them a call, explain the situation & I am sure you will get the same response.

Oh, and they all said how brilliant everything was there too!

Exactly what I thought, just didnt want to waste a journey up there if this wasn't the case, but will give them a call if we need a back up

How was Mardyke over the weekend?

The Grove is an above average american style parkland course, nothing to really write home about. I know it's a bit further round the M25 but why not consider either one round on one of the Sunningdale courses or a round on both courses at the Berkshire for similar money?

All 4 courses are considerably better than the Grove

Some very good suggestions there, will keep them in mind. Thanks D4S

Brocket Hall is vastly overpriced for visitors!

I play it (them, as there are 2 courses - both very good), reasonably frequently, as guest of a member and it's great value that way!

My instant thought was Woburn - specially if you make a day of it,playing 2 courses.

Thinking 'somewhere between', Ashridge is meant to be a bit special, as is Hadley Wood, but that's more for the Golf and surroundings than the 'occasion'. Moor Park might even be a consideration - with its rather grand looking clubhouse!

Just had a quick look at all of these course and they tick all the boxes for price, location and courses.
Thanks for the info  hope to get to play one of these soon, especially like the look of Moor Park and its clubhouse!

If you are prepared to drive further a round at Hankley will fit the bill. Fantastic course, in a stunning location. The heather should be out at the moment which is a bonus, except when you try and find your ball in it.:( Book in for a meal after the round in the Duke of Cambridge which is at the end of the road into Hankley.

I live just up the road so know the course well, and guarantee you it will be a special occasion.

Thanks for the advice, but seems a bit out of reach in terms of location for me.

Chris Not played Stoke park but hear its nice, geographically it seemed to fit the OP's brief, how much is exceedingly overpriced?

Right you are, fits perfectly. Seems a lovely place to play, but am interested in it being overpriced, £155 for a midweek round doesn't seem too overpriced for all those that have been suggested so far
