So, its a special occasion and the two options that have been considered are:
1) Sunningdale Old Course
2) Walton Heath Old Course

Can anyone who has played both of these courses say which one is more special?
When I say special, its as much about the experience as it is about the course.

Many thanks

Sunningdale - the best inland course in the country

Wonderful experience from the minute you get there

Complete no-brainer. Sunningdale every time.

Others to consider though........

St Georges Hill
The Berkshires
Swinley Forest (if you can get on)

I love Walton Heath - both courses. I was on The Old on Friday. A Day Ticket (both courses) makes it better value for a Visitor. The positive 'spin' is the wonderful view of Golf holes that only multiple links courses can match; the negative spin is 36 tough holes in an open field - with the roar of the M25 encroaching on at least 2!

But for a 'special' course, there is no doubt that Sunningdale - either of them - is head and shoulders above anything else, including all but the very top Links courses.

And adding the other Sunningdale Course (and Lunch) would really make it very special (and expensive!) day.

For 'Best Value Special Day' though, I would heartily recommend a Day at The Berkshire, with Lunch. Total cost is less than either Sunningdale Course on their own (I think) and the courses are the perfect length to be challenging without being too tiring for a round on each and short enough that there is no need to rush Lunch which is absolutely Top Notch!

Excellent summary, much as I love Walton Heath, Sunningdale Old just has that indefinable something that makes it more special. Good shout on the Berkshire too, which I would place ahead of Walton Heath for the definition of the holes and the changes of elevation, although Walton Heath is a stiffer test of golf in my opinion.

Thanks very much, appreciate the great feedback

I would probably have gone with the all day golf at Sunningdale, but they dont seem to have it available on their website for March 2014. I am assuming its either because they are working on the new course or that they dont think there are enough daylight hours?

If there's any possibility of having another 'special day' in the future in Summer, then I'd suggest you defer Sunningdale until when you can play both courses - provided you are able - as it's an unforgettable day. Same applies to The Berkshire (I got so engrossed in the subject, quite dear to me, that I forgot that it was for March; do-able but the need to rush a bit would spoil it somewhat imo.)

The 2 star Single courses around there (I discount The West as 'unforgettable but very poor value') are St Georges Hill and Hankley Common. Wouldn't say one was better than the other, as they are both great - Hankley the easier walk - but for what I believe you are looking for, I'd recommend SGH which, I believe, does a particularly good deal around that time!

Thanks Foxholer, St Georges Hill is £90 and Sunningdale is £120, the difference in cost is not large enough to make a difference in decision, so out of those 2 then, I assume based on everyones comments that Sunningdale still wins hands down?

Ps: Played Hankley and loved the course, amazing grounds etc... but as an overall experience it wasn't unforgettable

Marginal imo!

I agree, Hankley experience consists of Course and Isolation (Shinooks, Merlins etc aside). SGH has pretty much same 'special complete package' as Sunningdale. I'd balance the likelihood/possibility of getting back to Sunningdale for a 'both course' day against the likely regret of not having played either!

Sunningdale arent taking any bookings until the start of April!

Are you kidding me? So they are just closed to the public for the next 4.5 months?
