Not sure if many of you know anything about this event, but it looks brilliant in ever way, courses, value, organisation etc.

anyhow, the leader after 2 rounds has scored - 45 & 48pts off of 7!!! -21 through 2 rounds!!!

i don't care how 'hot' someone gets, that is suspicious to me.

suprised his name isn't Muldoon!!!

What are the prizes?

From the website: winner will win a £500 voucher and The Southport Coast Links Trophy . The 5 Venues are Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club, Formby Ladies Golf Club, West Lancashire Golf Club, Hillside Golf Club, hosting the qualifying for Royal Birkdale and Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club on the last day for the non-qualifiers .

That's some scoring. Formby ladies is short, but not overly easy... will be interesting to see a score at West Lancs if the wind shows its teeth!

so hes shot 2 under and 5 under gross - pretty good golf however suspicious the handicap is!!!

Anybody is capable of a good round
Anybody is capable of a freaky type scoring round

However, scoring like that, 2 rounds in a row on top courses, isn't normal, it isn't just suspicious, We all know what is , without using the CH.....word

No longer can it be said, golf is a game played by gentlemen
This sort of thing is rife

WOW! Calling someone cheat based on the 'facts' established in 6 forum posts. God forbid any of you have a good round one day. Is it not entirely possible this could just be good play? I'm a 11 hcp and shot +4 gross twice in a short space of time earlier this year, both in industry golf days, should I be called a cheat too?

I've seen 48pts in society golf, never in a club comp, that I've been a member of
Yes I've seen 45
But that's generally fast improving double digit handicap golfers
Can't recall ever seeing a single digit golfer score like that at any club I've been a member of
It was stated he was a 7

So that's 2 under gross, followed up by a 5 under gross

I've yet to play with a 7 capper that can do that.......have you.....??

He has a point like.

You are correct it is possible, BUT you'd still be 7 shots behind after 2 rounds!! let that sink in. 7shots!!!

I agree, this to me is a prime example of someone protecting their handicap for a big event. Call it what you want, but you just dont shoot these scores.

at least he'll get cut to at worst 4 for the 2 rounds.

Yeah I agree about the improving double digit guy. but i've not played enough golf with low handicappers to agree with the second point. I've heard of it, but maybe more so with 2/3 guys though.
Essentially it is all possible, we shouldn't call anyone a cheat should we??

Well....it's a big comp
He's 15 shots clear
He's shot 2 UNDER "GROSS"
Followed up by
5 UNDER "GROSS"

That's kinda hard to take in.
Have you played with anybody that's shot UNDER par Gross....??
Or
Anybody that's done it 2 days in a row.....??

I've seen somebody shoot 5 UNDER par Gross
But
He was a plus 3 handicapper

He wasn't a 7 handicapper.....!!!

This is not just a case of, yes it's possible, or every dog has its day
These are serious scores

Also the reason why my club no longer runs opens
They will though run scratch open events

The -2 at S&A is the standout score, far more impressive than -5 at Formby Ladies which is either a drivable par 4 or a flick with a wedge for your approach shot.

Looking at the scoring there are plenty in the 40s at Formby Ladies.
As Karl mentioned.. It'll be interesting to see what comes in at West Lancs.

Trying to equate this feat to my own handicap.

That would be me shooting 4 over and 1 over, on two consecutive rounds, on unfamiliar courses, with the pressure of being in a comp

Nope, not having it.

The ONLY reasonable explanation for this is that the guy has always been a huge hitter, but a bit of a 'sprayer', who has 3 blow-up holes per round, and something has just 'clicked'. Even at that, he still has to have a scratch level short game to shoot as low as Net -12. That's a frigging decent Texas Scramble score!

The other thing to consider here is that if he is a cheat, would he not be smart enough to 3-putt the last few holes to make the difference between 1st and 2nd place a little less conspicuous.

Overall, I don't really care and given that his scoring is off the charts, I'm sure the comp organisers will be in close touch with the handicap sec at his home club to enquire as to his performances over time. I doubt they're in the business of handing over £500 if there is even a sniff of banditry.

Wouldn't it be lovely though if he was just having the luckiest, jammiest rounds of his life, all piled into one championship? Chip ins, holing out from 100 yards, 40 foot putts dropping all over the place. It's a bit like asking 10,000 people to toss a coin. At least one of them will get tails 50 times in a row. They would think they were pretty special. Others would call him a cheat.

i can find one qualifier he's played in since May.

I've only played 1... However, that's the total of my golf this year so I guess it doesn't count... :D

With respect to the courses, as Qwerty says, S&A is a very playable course when you're playing well. It's not as penal as West Lancs or any of the others except Formby Ladies (which is a gentle stroll). I do think the scores arouse suspicion, but I'll be more concerned if he shoots under par at WL as that course can rip out your soul if you're not on top form.

Certainly very suspicious- is it a great spell of form ? Or has it happened before

Right now I think the best way is to suggest innocent until proven otherwise - he is going to get some big cuts so I would look at it being more as someone who has hit the button
