Southgate - a lot of dosh?

Depends who you listen to. BBC news saying it could be 1m rising to 1.5m per year but seems to be a going rate for the FA and the role. Still not convinced Southgate is really the man for the job but he's clearly got it so we'll see what happens

Reported to be about to be offered 1.5 million pounds p.a.until 2020. Does this make sense?

Do you mean it's too much or too little ?

It's the same sort of wage that the Benfica manager is on

And a lot behind the likes Pep and Maureen at £14mil

It's also a lot less than people like Hodgson , Sven , Allerdyce and Capello got. Hodgson was the highest paid manager at Euro 2016 for example

Think he could do well

FA shouldn't pay him too much, he has no record or reputation at all in management so the £1.5m/yr is more than enough. For me he's too inexperienced, too young for an international manager and a bit of dullard, seems a bit soft nicey-nicey as a character so not really leader material, there's nothing about him that could really inspire players and he should be cutting his teeth in the leagues for longer, has only managed Middlesborough for a bit, did ok then got them relegated then got sacked following season, that's it, managing England U21s doesn't mean anything, what did he do the 4 years between Middlesborough and England U21s even? Think some of the edgier England players could intimidate and run rings round him tbh, he'll be running the team in name only.

Time will tell.

It's better than the £4m+ that the past managers were getting. I suspect it is less than every PL manager and less than half the Championship managers so when you look at it like that it is about right.

I have my doubts he's the right man for the job, I hope he proves me wrong, got to have had the easiest job interview ever, couldn't of got 3 easier teams and nothing in those games convinced me he is the right man, wage is immaterial if he is succesful and a nice pay off if he fails.

Wouldn't be my choice... he did very little at the Boro. But as for the edgier players running rings round him, he's as hard as nails.

He's going to be the subject of near constant abuse and ridicule for as long as he's in the job and his reputation will be trashed when he leaves so only right to ask for decent money.

Given the salaries of some of the players at his disposal for the national team he's been hard done by! He's not nearly as crap a manager as they are players!!! :D

The FA should wait until the summer, just in the hope that someone else a bit more exciting comes along. If not, then give it to Soutgate. It's not like people are queueing up to appoint him.

Like who though ?

None of the top managers would touch the job

The list of managers queuing up to do international football isn't long because the money and the kudos is in club football

I do agree and there aren't many names out there, but the summer is when hou might expect a couple of people out of jobs that might be interested. Certainly more than there would be/is now.Wenger is a big stretch, and I wouldn't be surprised if gets a new contract with Arsenal but you never know.

But we don't want a manager who wants the job just for the money and kudos. We need him to have passion and the desire for Englands cause - that's why he has to be English.

They'll have known from the Allardyce interviews who else was interested or suitable.
As much as Southgate is not my choice if he's their's then they should of appointed him straight away, this 4 game trial is unfair.
What happens if we get battered in a pointless friendly tonight, he'll have the game dragged up time and time again, if we win, it'll be the old "it's only a friendly and doesn't count"
