Anybody played southerners recently?? Is it worth a 2 hour journey there?
Looking for an open to play on Sunday and I have whitekirk or southerners as options, whitekirk is only 45 mins away but I'm wondering if southerners is worth the star travel as iv heard it's a really nice course.
Opinions?

Absolutely, a fantastic and challenging course. Some stunning holes and lovely scenery. I would head there if I were you. No doubt the open will be an absolute bargain.

Take your satnav, not the easiest place in the world to find.

Its a great course!!! It chewed me up and spat me (and a few more of us) out. The wind was brutal, we were nutting drivers into par 3's and not reaching.

As others have said it's a quality track and well worth the couple of hours drive. All the open comps there are great value and I will be there myself next month to get my annual . 2 back in the 36 scratch open.

It is a tough course as reflected in sss at 4 over par and if your game is off it will chew you up but it is a very rewarding feeling if you come away with a good score.

Its a flat course and their are no blind shots so their is no great disadvantage for the first time visitor, in fact my best score was made on my first visit.

My advice is to give it a go.

Go. No brainer.

It was that tough that I picked up and walked after 14 holes (weather) but I was very taken by the course.

A very natural golf course, perfect design.

As everyone has said a big yes from me! I played this course last year and loved it, it was my 1st time playing links golf and was surprised how enjoyable it was!

The greens were superb and the views are amazing, even seen some wild deer on the fairway!

The only moan is the drive to get to it but that's only a slight moan and would defo play again. I am looking to do Siloth this summer if I can convince my mates as I believe that course is very similar to Southeness!

Get it on a nice day with gorse in bloom and there's not many places I'd rather be.
Get it on a bad day and its one of the toughest tests in the UK.

A superb course though regardless and very underrated IMO.

Two very different courses. Silloth has massive dunes whereas southerness is flat.

True, and one or two blind shots at Silloth. You don't get many flat lies at Silloth and it plays faster when dry as the turf at Southerness is quite 'springy'.

Both are quality courses.

Southerness is light years ahead of Whitekirk so well worth the drive.

Spat me out when I played it in horrendous weather, as tough as it gets on a bad day!!

Great course though and one I want to go back to.

I don't think I hit the ball higher than about 20 feet all day long except for one hybrid out of the rough I got way under, shot it in the air and it nearly came back to me in the wind.

Serious test of golf skills and mental strength. I was a beaten man by the end but I would love another crack at it now that I have warmed up again. Lol

You must go and play Southerness - simple as that. Great layout and as many others have already quite rightly said, if the wind blows it can be a beast!

The design of the course is very well thought out with subtle changes in direction meaning you have to have total control of your golf ball if you want to score well. I found the greens a delight when I played too. All told, you will regret it if you don't play there.

Just backing up what some others have also said, a drive to Silloth on Solway is also well worth it. It's more rugged than Southerness but there are some fantastic holes there, especially the par 3 9th and the par 5 13th. Let me put it another way. If Silloth was located on the Kent coast it would be inundated with visitors and applications for membership. It is that good and a real test when the wind gets up.

Choose either of these 2, or both, you won't regret it :)

Looks like it's pretty unanimous then, it's been blowing a gale up here for the last 3 months. Tough test ahead then.

Not necessarily.
I played it on Monday as part of our annual Scottish tour.
There wasn't a breath of wind and we couldn't have played it on a better day.
It's a cracking course and the views from the 12th green/13th tee will take some beating.
Treat yourself and make the trip.
