Hi all.
I took my car into Halfords auto centre last week for a full service.
When I took it in it had no squeak
There were a couple of advisorys that the breaks needed doing.
Today I rang and this is how it went.

Me.hi I brought my car in for a full service last week,
My car has now got a squeak.
Him.we did advise you the rear brakes needed replacing.

I never even mentioned where the squeak was.
When I pulled him on this he started getting defensive
And started saying sorry.
Am I being paranoid or does it also sound dodgy to you.

It's typical of Halfrauds. I went there with a half price MOT voucher and the car failed on quite a few things. I was pretty sure that it was fine so I took it to a council MOT station and it passed with no problems.

They most likely nudged something to create the squeak and the brakes most likely have another year or two left in them. (In my experience with Halfrauds)

tell you who I found (unexpectedly) great for service, Arnold Clark.

service and advice there saved me replacing parts that Halfords and Kwik Fit said with a sharp intake of breath 'I cant say it's dangerous but it would be good to replace the tyres and brakes'.....

good for who, Tom Farmer or the Halfords shareholders?????

Arnold clark showed me they had 6 mths life left with no danger and offered a great discount when it came to replacing them.

I didn't, I bought a car of them instead. It Pays to be honest with potential customers.

I have always found Arnold Clark give a first class service. Been with then for years now.

They're all at it. My cab had its yearly inspection last week (MOT but a bit stricter) at the council approved main dealer testing station. Conversation went like this

Tester: its failed, needs two new front tyres
Me: Really? they're 4 months old
Him: Well, its 2.5 mm for cars, but 3.5mm for taxis, but I'll come and have another look
Me (at car now): What depth are those wear bars set at?
Him: 3.5mm
Me: so surely if there is rubber above that height then its a pass?
Him: Ummm, errr, uhhh, I'll sign it off for you, but they'll need changing soon...

Idiot.

2.5mm for cars? 1.6mm you mean?

I had a friend who was a senior manager of an service centre before halfrauds took them over, after 6 months he left as he couldn't believe their attitude and the way they would rinse customers of every last penny they could.

If you had a puncture... It needed a tyre
If you needed a tyre,,, it's best to replace both on that axel
If you needed two fronts, you needed a set
Worms pads meant pads and discs
Worn discs meant new calipers
Dodger battery's meant new alternators.

He's manager was leading but the example of get as much as you can every time as we are paid on profit.... I'd never go there on principles

Dont you know anyone in the trade to service your car , these people and those like them are there to mlk you , i needed tyres and they said i needed brakes and shockers as well , i just ask them to put the tyres back on and never returned ........................EYG

I did the same at my local KF. Actually went in for exhaust (blowing) but asked them to check brakes (free check) whilst they were at it. Total bill on my return was a mind blowing £650. Put it back together mate the cars not worth that ! I then took car round to my MOT place. Exhaust? It'll be ok don't worry about it (found the bit in e bay for £120 but have left it for now). All brakes done for £120. That'll do for me ! That's the last time I'll go there. I used to have car insurance with them too, till they rocketed the cost of that as well.

upselling is a basic principal in any business.

However, lying shouldn't be, it's where one crosses into the other that the problems arise.
