So I've been playing sport for a long time, a life time. Always been a team player. So I hope you can help me out with this question. But first a bit of context...

So I'm playing football, I've skipped past a challenge and have a tight angle but as a striker I have a pop at goal but it hits the side netting. My strike partner was unmarked and I shoukd have squared it. My hand goes up "sorry mate"...

I'm playing cricket and I'm keeping wicket. The batsmen is a good player and scored a ton in the reverse fixture. Our bowler has tied him up in knots and bowls an unplayable delivery that swings in then seams away and catches the outside edge. But I drop the catch. Hand goes up "sorry mate"...

I'm playing foursomes The game is tight and I'm teeing off. I take driver but carve my ball out of bounds... why am I not supposed to apologise...:confused:
 
You're not supposed to say sorry as you know - nobody hits a bad shot deliberately, you hit a lot of shots during a round of golf - chances are some of them (most maybe) won't go where you intend.

If sorry was expected I'd be divorced after some of the mixed foursomes the missus and I have played in.
 
Yeah but I didn't drop the ctach on purpose or ignore my team mate on purpose or play a grubber rather than setting up the ruck on purpose but I still apologise in those circumstances...

Don't. Problem solved ;)

If I gave the ball away in a game (1992 was the only time it happened ;)) the hand goes up to acknowledge that the pass was crap, not to say sorry.

There are 'tones' to an apology.

Hypothetically....

As the striker, he did go for goal intentionally - reply, "sorry pal but I had to go for it". (Meaning you weren't sorry :D)

Behind the stumps - 9/10 I'd assume you'd catch it as would your teammates, reply, "#%*\ sake, sorry mate, that was a bad show, can't believe it, soz"

On the tee - 7,8/ 10 you'd hit it on the fairway. If you were the real Tiger then perhaps but as you're not so a simple cuss would suffice. Wasn't meant and not expected.
 
Having been guilty of each of the other "failures" that you cited I cannot understand why anyone would apologise for either event. In the football example you made a decision but it did not come off and in the case of the keeper at cricket an attempt was made to catch the ball but it was unsuccessful, it happens.

Just like foursomes, no cause for an apology.

Sorry Robobum, I have to disagree.
Okay, I'm disagreeing deliberately so I have to apologise, but even if I'd disagreed accidentally I would still feel that I'd have to apologise.
I think intent is largely irrelevant and I'd always apologise if I thought I'd let my team down.

The difference is, in team sports, none of your playing partners agreed to play with you. They had you dumped on them by a coach, and they may yet all hate you, and think you are incompetent. Sorry is a good word. It might buy you some forgiveness.

In foursomes, your partner had a choice. He could have said no, or not asked you to partner him. He probably knows your failings, and strengths. He also knows the mistake you fouled up on, could have been his, quite easily. He has accepted before hand that either of you could be useless, and has signed off on this prior to stepping on the course. Sorry is not necessary. Buying the beers afterwards is a given.

cause you can't pass the ball to them to make the shot- simples

He was being selfish and didn't play for the team in that particular case, he also made the wrong choice tactically as the high percentage play was to square it to his mate for a tap in. I'd apologise to the other player if it was me, I'd also feel a right tw@t after seeing it hit the side netting :rolleyes:
