I played 4BBB friendly match last Saturday and despite the cold we managed to play in good spirits, few snifters from the hip flask and good banter all round....

All square after 8 holes,
We arrived at the 9th (stroke index 1) par 4, I smoked one of the best 2-irons I have ever hit and was sat in the best position of the four of us....

the two shorter hitters played their second shots and nothing out of the ordinary happened

I stopped level with the third guys ball, Let's call him Mexican Tom, to watch his shot, and I was still congratulating myself on my great shot...

until Mexican Tom, nutted a hybrid from about 180 yards, straight onto the dance floor, about 25 feet of roll straight in to the cup for a 2

A Gross Eagle...

And he gets a shot...

Lots of whooping and cheering and even high fives...

The dust settles, or maybe the snow, and as I reach my ball the realisation hits me that I've already had too many shots if I want to win the hole.

Needed an ace on a par 4 to win....I didn't even hit the green

Sometimes you just have to say well played...so I did.

Again...Well Played Tom :)

Anyone else played a great shot only to find out it wasn't good enough?

Not so much a great shot ...... But a great Round
Last year , in my clubs singles Match Play 'knockout' I played against an 18 H/Capper
I was off 9 H/Cap at the time
I shot a Gross 75 , ( majority holed out - very little was given ) , and was BEATEN
Shot the lights out and didnt even go through.........Bring back 3/4 diff.......lol

You're gonna hate it when we play :p

Like you say sometimes there is nothing you can do. I remember chipping in for an eagle on our par 5 fifth and certain we'd be going one up. One opponent was out of the hole and the other was in real bundra for two. I couldn't believe it when he whacked it out and it stopped an inch away. Birdie for him nett eagle with his shot. He could have played it from that lie 100 times and never got it that close again. What can you do but smile say well done and move on.

I was playing a guy last summer who had a very cocky manner. He hit a cracking shot on a 185 yard par 3 that stopped up pin high and around 2 feet left of the pin. " Get one inside of that" he chirped, so I hit a hole in one, SWEET!

I got to the final of our singles matchplay the year before last. I played an 11 hc in the final and although I didn't play great I wasn't that bad.
I lost on the 12th hole, and my opponent was -2 gross for the 11 holes he completed (picked up on the 1 hole I won).
I know he's not a bandit, he just had 'one of those days'.

The best single shot kick in the goolies I've seen was in a 4BBB ko match the same year.
From about 130 one of our opponents hit his approach to about 2' so they've got to be fancying their chances of winning the hole. My partner from about 120 holed out. Ouch!!
