Played in our medal today and although I wasn't playing to well my goal after 9 was to make the buffers. Started bogey bogey on the back 9 and still wasn't worried. On our 12th an OB is on the right next to the railway track. Here is where I lost it. My playing partner for the round hit his drive way left and proceeded after his shot to inform me that he's lost count how many times he has been on the railway track and that it's easy done. There you go BOOM first time in 3 seasons out the 4 I've played golf I put it straight out. I just can't help feeling that if he hadn't said that the thought of going OB on that hole wouldn't have happened. Doubt if ill have made the buffers now tho.

Any thoughts on the hole should be mentioned after we've completed it not on the tee.

The thoughts expressed by your buddy should have been kept to himself until after you'd played. Seriously bad etiquette as it most certainly puts thoughts in youtr mind. You concentrate on NOT doing what he's mentioned - and of course you'll inevitably put in a swing that results in exactly the opposite of what you had intended and the result you didn't want. Naughty.

In our bounce games, tbis sort of thing isn't frowned upon and is i deed positively encouraged..
The number of times it's been mentioned to Fragger that there is a pond to the left of the 8th green is almost equal to the number of times he stuffs one in it..

In Competition it's not on though....

whether innocent or deliberate it's inevitable at some point - in my case I can manage to do it all on my own by holding such a conversation with myself!

yet another part of the huge mental jungle that is golf...

Meh, best way to think about it is that there is the whole county to the left. Perhaps he was justifying his naff shot by ssying he meant it. I wouldnt say anything as ultimately it is you that has to hit the shot.

I tend to have that nagging voice in my head anyway without the need for my partner to say anything. I can play some sublime golf and sooner or later that voice will be heard and it'll say don't chunk that chip or don't go left/right and so it will come to pass. Once it gets a foothold things only get worse
