I'm about to buy a set of irons, and a driver, 3 wood and hybrid. Im interested in any suggestions. I am a beginner, and budget for irons and drivers would be £700. Any suggestions to which irons and wedges to purchase (eg sw and pw, and irons i can do without e.g. 2 iron).

I was thinking about purchasing used. I'm a bit concerned re all the counterfeit clubs apparantly around at the moment. Should i buy used from a retailer or any advice regarding buying on gumtree etc. I dont have any potential sellers at the mo, im just trying to research first.

Im unsure regarding 'grip wear'. Does this mean the grip is actually losing grip, or the grip is becoming loose and needs glueing?

Also, are there any clubs or irons which are longer lasting than others from wear (i was looking at the razr x irons and wondered if the matt finish would be better for longer use). Alternatively, does using softer golf balls have any impact (pun intended).

Hybrid clubs can replace longer (often more difficult to use) clubs so you could get a set from 4-SW. Grip wear will mean losing grip e.g. Worn. Like car tyres it will depend how worn!

Might be a good idea to go to a shop that stock second hand gear to find out what suits you best. You should be able to do quite well with the budget you have.

Good luck.

That budget seems rather large!
My first set cost me £280 to put together - everything was used and I bought it all off ebay.
With that budget you may as well go to American golf, use their simulator and determine which clubs you like the most.

The counterfeit club market is worth billions by the way - if you are going to buy online you should either buy from a trusted retailer or check with the manufacturers who their selected partners are. Or you do run the risk of buying counterfeit stuff

good luck and good luck with the golf

The first thing you want to do is to try out as many types of irons/clubs you can, so if you can find a driving range that has a shop attached great.
If not I would be tempted to look at local clubs and see what offers the pros have there, at least you will have the chance to try them out. As its your first set of clubs my advice would be to buy off someone who knows what they are talking about and can steer you in the right direction.

If your gona buy second hand online, buy from golfbidder at least that way you know your not going to be getting fakes. If you buy from the likes of ebay the chances are higher.

As reguards to clubs with £700 you get a decent set for that, you could even buy new for that. Best to either go to american golf or direct golf or a pro and see what you like. Try loads of clubs to see what fits you best. I wouldnt tie your self in for a brand or model just yet as you may try them and there no good for you.

Best way is to just go with no expectations of clubs and find what gives the best results, everyone is different.

you can get great started sets for sub £400 and they will see you right for years!

A guy I work with got a John letters set from direct golf for about £250 and i am pretty sure they gave him a lesson included in the price!
