In our society we use handicap master but it doesnt really reflect on how good some high handicappers hit the ball, we have several players who constantly score 4 points on holes with 2 shots but sometimes dont score any on some other holes.
We use a system within the software to deduct a shot off the winner, but of the winner only shoots 35 points he gets a percentage back as they did not shoot to handicap, even though sometimes they have had 2 or even 3 blobs.
We are only in our 2nd year as a society but it seems to becoming a problem for other players who are not happy with the system, especially the lower handicappers.
Any help greatly appreciated.

But as you know the handicap allowance isn't a reflection on how well you play any one hole, its applied to a round of 18 holes and if your high handicap can win scoring 35pts then the real issue might be that your low handicaps are incorrect i.e are they vanity ones (if real of course it means that low handicappers are simply playing poorly & need to up their game)

we have a monthly work society.

whoever wins loses 3 shots off their handicap, second loses 2 shots and whoever finishes 3rd loses one shot.
The person who scores the lowest points gains a shot back on their handicap.

Simple and very effective

Thanks for the feedback, Sugar penguin if we have a player who is on 7 handicap it would be a bit extreme to drop him 3 shots, whereas a higher handicapper say 28 would be relevant.

In my society if someone scores over 42 points they lose 10% of their handicap.
37-38 points 1 stroke, 39-41 2 strokes
Our handicap system does not have an upper limit we have one chap on 49 , but as long as the same people aren't winning again and again it shows that it works.

Our society use to be massive , handicap system workred well i think
New members 3 outings before you can wn a prize (10 outings a yr)

Overall winner CUT 3
Cat winners Cut 2
Cat Runner up Cut 1

If you go 3 outings without a prize you get a shot back , ie you would be off 9a 9b 9c 10a etc

Worked really well IMO

I understand what you mean but thats kind of the point though - so each player has a better shot at winning as the rounds go on. It depends how you are running the society. The system we use is great for stableford.

I really like the sound of this

The whole point of a society handicapping system is to redistribute the winners throughout the group over time; taken to its logical conclusion, if you play enough it's just a matter of time before you eventually win.

'Better golfers' do not always appreciate this side of the game. They are inherently competitive, probably practice, and expect to be able to win more because they are better and work at it. I once knew a society secretary who inherently appeciated the issue and always listed a best gross prize at each event - it was always a pack of three Topflites 😂

Our works society has a system whereby players with official handicaps play off that, players without have a society handicap which is also maintained using HandicapMaster (I think there's a mechanism to accelerate the 0.1's as we only do 7 outings a year), regardless of handicap there is a points/shot reduction for winning of 1 (Cat1), 2 (Cat 2/3) and 3 (Cat 4). These aren't handicap adjustments which are separate, just a penalty for picking up a prize to try to share it all out a bit and apply for the rest of the season. Quite complicated I suppose but it works really well.

This always seems to be an issue in Societies. You end up having a variety of playing standards and the better players get browned of with scoring a solid 37 points only to get whooped by someone coming in with 42 of a high handicap. I have always thought that prizes based on Hncp Categories would probably be the way forward and an overall prize for best Gross score or best Net with a maximum Hncp of 18. Trouble is you are never going to please all of the people all of the time......
