dont even know what a society is:confused:

sounds interesting though

Not into the history of how the Game began, developed and evolved then?

R&A started off as a 'society' and HCEG was one as well. Bruntsfield and Royal Burgess still have it in their 'official' names. A couple of other clubs formed that way too - Merchants being fairly self-explanatory, Duddingston was Insurance/Finance (though skipped a couple of start-up steps) and so on.

Clubs evolved from Societies, which is why there can be several clubs playing at the same course - St Andrews, Musselburgh, Braids being examples.

I play both and to be honest I get much more enjoyment from the Society comps than the occasional bureaucratical bs that comes along with club comp days.

I have been a member of a society (Bispham hotel old boys) for a couple of years. We play once a month and the dedicated ones then go to Portugal for 3/4 days in October time to finish off...

Since I have joined the club this year I am considering my society golf.. This weekend I am in the club comp sat morning then the society has a day at Morecombe on Sunday.. HID is not too happy at the 'all weekend golf' idea.

I did explain this will only be once a month and I may not play one or the other some months if it clashes with 'family' stuff.

Yes, been in a work golf society for about 15 years. It used to be pretty formal with Jacket and Tie etc but over the years the dress code has been relaxed and now we simply conform to the rules of the club we are visiting which on the whole amounts to golf gear or smart casual. Run an outing very month over the summer, a knock-out, order of merit and a 2 day Sunday Driver ryder Cup style event with another society in the autumn.

I am a member of a society thats run from my local in Wokingham called the Wokingham Amateur Golf Association (WAGA). Its more 'mates golf'' than anything else and since I joined in August last year I have been made to feel very welcome.

We tend to play more affordable courses (Sunningdale Ladies, Pirbright, Pine Ridge, etc) to allow us to get out once a month and they hold various in house tournaments such as player of the year rankings base on the 'race to dubai' format, singles and doubles knockouts and in every meet theres 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies and longest drice and nearest the pin. Makes for great fun and costs stay between £30-£40 incl trophies.

Its very informal so no jacket and tie, normally is a drink and food laid on back at the pub. The landlord is very accomodating.

However I do like the idea of a more formal gathering. I think its good to remember the traditions of Golf. How often and at what sort of courses does your society get together Liverpoolphil? And what is the average cost?

Well the Mariners play on Heathland courses - so far it's been The Berkshire and Blackmoor with North Hants coming up - also have another 5 courses around the area including Liphook - all beautiful courses at a very reasonable price.

The Other Society play our first one at Aldwickbury Park , then Studley Wood, Oxfordshire , Grove , Essendon and Ashridge

Average cost for them varies between £40 to £80 a round - again all great Parkland courses.

Both of them have a meet every month

Bagshot?

If it is, it does a great Breakfast!

Seems ideal for Phil then!

It's perfect - nice social golf with lots of banter , food and drink

Enjoyment is the key as opposed to the score

I'm not officially in yet! They tried their hardest to leave me off the mailing list:o
All I need is to learn the funny handshake, and pick up my tie. (And part with some cash) I'm hoping to make my full debut at north hants, don't worry Rich I won't have 4th helpings of the sticky toffee pudding this time

It was nice sticky toffee pudding though !!

I belong to 4. 2 only meet 3 or 4 times a year and 2 have things going on most months through the year. Great way to play a range of courses and meet up with some great comrades even if some of them are pony soldiers.
