Not sure what's expected in this situation.

Teed off at 1:30 as a 1 ball today and got caught behind a works society day. Looked like 4-5 groups of 4 balls all in buggies.

I kept catching the group in front and they never offered to let me though.

I didn't ask to be let through as I wasn't sure if I was entitled in this situation.

What's the done thing ?

The round took 4 1/2 hours in the end. Didn't mind too much as it was a really nice day.

On a side note. When you book a tee time during the week, as a member, would you expect to be 'warned' there is a big society group out in front of you ? I'd have probably still played anyway, but just curious.

In the olden days when I was learning "The Etiquette" the rule was that a single player "has no standing on the course". I suppose you either hope 1-3 players catch up with you and you join up to achieve overtaking status. But do you really want to spend your time wading through a Society field?
What I used to do was play two or three balls at each hole, effectively making me play at the speed of a 3-ball and a lot more useful, practical and cheaper than thrashing balls down the range.

I think you are being overly optimistic to expect to get through the entire society. Even if one group lets you through there is no guarantee the others will and then you have a concertina effect where you're waiting for the 4 ball and the group behind are waiting for you.

In that circumstance I'd have either teed off from the 10th or do as you did and dawdle behind and perhaps play several balls.

Single players do now have standing.

I think that societies generally do like to stay together and as has been said, if you get through one group, you'd be stuck behind another.

I generally paly slow and take my time over shots and play a couple of balls.

If I get really hacked off, i'll miss a few holes and cut through somewhere

I wasn't really expecting to get let through tbh. I just wondered what the 'etiquette' was.

Wasn't a major problem, had a nice day out. :D :D

Since a large outing = a lot of money I'm afraid they will get whatever they want.

Pays to check the noticeboard for any details of outings etc.

though we don't book tee-times I'll always be warned of societies on course (we had two today, one of 20, one of 36) and advised of the best course of action, first, tenth or don't bother.

I joined up with another guy in the same boat on the first, we caught up with the society on the third but fortunately met an old mate playing the tenth so switched to a fourball round the back with him, then played the front. other than my chronic loss of driving ability, we had no trouble at all.
