I very rarely play social golf at my home course but I play in almost every comp qualifiers and non-qualifiers.
It can be a good change playing bounce games but I don't seem to enjoy them as much as I do the comps.

I know of a few members who don't like playing in comps aswell.

What's your preference?

defo both. as i play golf as a means of escape and relaxation from things. and the social games are a good way of meeting new folk and having a laugh. i enjoy comps aswell as im testing myself and handicap every week

Qualifiers, bounce, that early morning summer solo round when the dew is heavy and you are first out - it's all good. Pushed for an preference the probably the latter.

A mix but I think I prefer competition golf. I just like the "pressure" of having a card and find I don't concentrate anywhere near the same in a bounce game.

In order of preference

1. A bounce game with a little competitive edge. £1 here or there. A couple of beers on the way round and a few more in the clubhouse. For me that is golf at its very best and its rarely even spoiled by a poor score, although obviously its a hell of a lot better if you do score well.

2 Medal and competition play. Although I don't enjoy it as much, its a different feeling playing with strangers in a medal. Much more focused and serious. Only really enjoyable if you score well.

3 Lone practice. Essential to make 1 and 2 that bit more enjoyable but a real slog sometimes. Usually do an hour on the practice ground plus 9 holes at least once a week. Enjoy it 50% of the time.

I enjoy both for what they are.
Comps are great for pressure golf against the course or against an opponent in matchplay.
Bounce games are great for the fun and banter that goes with them. In the group that I play with regularly there are a few "rules". You are not allowed to get annoyed with yourself, you are not allowed to take it seriously or you get fined and you have to take the mickey out of each other at every available opportunity especially in good shots!
It's great fun whenever we play but there are four of us who really get on well and we have been heard laughing at the other end of the course from the club house.
A warm sunny day with a light wind, but enough to make it interesting, and some great company is what this game is all about.

If the choice was either medal comp every time or a fourball knock with some good buddies, I'll take the 4 ball. I prefer the craic with the guys + a small side bet than a single's comp in which, if you are having a mare there's nowt to play for after half the round.

Have to admit my preference is to play comps over bounce games in general. Unless its an away day at another course ten I like a good jolly with a couple side bets.

A good fourball with people you know with something riding on it is the most fun imo. Its way more important than a club comp :D

The bragging rights are priceless

Drinking whilst playing is normally frowned upon.

I've never had a drink on the course, but I've never frowned upon it either. There are lots of things that should be frowned upon, but I'm not sure that taking a little drink should be one of them. Plenty of people I know carry a little hip flask in the winter. Or is it just drinking from cans that is frowned upon?

why care if the bloke likes a can or 2 as he plays? as long as he is not getting out his pram or chucking cans on the floor why is it any ones problem? rather care what I am doing then any one else is.

Hence why I kinda highlighted that part Danny, many would frown on it. Doesnt overly worry me though providing its only one or 2, they are not getting drunk, not walking the fairways with bottles or cans in their hands and not more importantly holding up play ;)

I would like to think those who have beer on the course are not driving.

Full agreement once again Val....
