As far as I can see the 'Rules' carve a 'Swing' into at least three bits: Backswing, Downswing and Follow thro.
Hence, for example, there can be a penalty for touching the sand etc. on the backswing.
But since you cannot physically hit the golf ball without some amount of 'backward' movement of the club-head and permit a degree of forward motion after impact why isn't a Swing just that: 'a' swing.
Wouldn't it simplify matters and avoid some of the recent controversy where penalties have been applied only after a hi-res video replay has shown 'grains' of sand displaced and no advantage has been intended/gained?
