Just returned from todays experiment at Crowborough Beacon, firstly I would like to say thanks to GM and to Jezz for the hospitality afforded to us, thanks for the goody-bag with the DVD and the dozen Pro-V's and to Crowborough Beacon for their truly wonderful course.

Well, as mentioned elsewhere by Mike, the weather was a nightmare. Myself and Andy (bunkermentality123) were off as a 2-ball 1st and we literally had 50yds of visibility because of the fog an copious amounts of rain.

Because of the conditions the competition that was scheduled (18 hole medal) became 9 holes.

The following players went out as a 3-ball and 4-ball respectively.

The experiment, was a study on speed of play and the things that effect it. A very interesting dicussion was had on this in the clubhouse afterwards.

As for the competition, the event was won by Chris (murphthemog) who won a snazzy new ping putter, 2nd place went to Sam (sammmebee)who won a clothing voucher for the pro-shop and 3rd to Roger (leftie)who won a tasty taylor-made bag. The last of the prize winners was myself and I won a further dozen Pro-V's.

From a personal point of view I was delighted to play to my handicap and get a net 36 on the back 9 medal competition. Were it not for a foolish 1 stroke penalty and a couple of woeful putts could have scored better but in hard conditions, on a new and difficult track I was chuffed to be amongst the prizes.

All in all another great day, nice to meet other GM forummers, and best of all experiencing another great track.

Worst conditions to start with that I have had to suffer for a while but by the time we got to the 5th/6th it was okay...

Great course - I would recommend a visit if you can next summer...

Murphthemog beat me on countback over the last 6 as we were both tied on 3 under for the back 9 (nett), which I managed to play in i under gross and only hitting 2 greens in regulation...

Good day, good company and at last some good golf....and hapless we need to play again as you're much better than you think you are and just need a few pointers on how to get the little white thing in the hole!!

Now jon - talk us through this one shot penalty....

The penalty was thus, On the 16th I was on the green and had 2 putts for a par (nett eagle), I then proceeded to putt like a twit again leaving my 3rd (and very short) putt on the edge of the whole, rather than tapping it in, out of pure disgust I picked my ball up without marking or anything. I did put it back however and after consultation with the pro and his R&A rulebook, a 1-stroke penalty was applied to my score.

Just got sat down after bathing the nipper and putting him to bed.

Can I join the praise for the day out. Thanks to Jezz and the team. I've never palyed that type of course before (it showed!), and I'll be the first to admit that I struggled a bit!

Phil, Chris and Sam were very supportive, and each played some exceptional shots in my limited knowledge and therefore opinion. But there were some crackers.

Chris, would love to. At least I did the right thing in picking up on two holes, considering what the experiment turned out to be.

Highlights for me have got to be that long putt, the par 3 on the front nine when I dug the ball out of the gorse bush, and of course landing on the green from the tee on the par 3. Maybe not much to some of you, but as proved, I am that bad!!

I know that I probably came last. But I really don't give a hoot. Good company, nice course, if some what tricky, and some nice balls for my to lose, (I'll keep them for next summer).

Jezz

If you ever need a guinea pig, I'll be happy to help. Perhaps a "can a bad golfer be turned into a reasonable one after a weeks tuition in, say, Portugal! :D

Once again ta everyone.

I would also like to thank everyone at GM for a fantastic day and the goody bag. I'm not sure the balls will make it past the weekend if i play anything like i did today.

It was great to meet everyone and play a type of course i've never played before. The First tee shot was intresting to say the least. It was heavy rain and we couldn't see where the fairway began.

I struggled all day with bad tee shots and playing out of the heather. I'm personally gutted that I dont think I showed one bit of my potential today. That said, I was in a friendly three ball and they got me through.

Great day and I look forward to the next.

Chris, would love to. At least I did the right thing in picking up on two holes, considering what the experiment turned out to be.

Sorry Sam, trying to eat at the same time. I hope that you knew who / what I meant. Been up to long, must go to bed.

Amazed that anyone would want to play with me again!

I did make you look good though. :D

Minty (sorry already forgotten your real name :o), back on home track this weekend, surely it should seem a little easier after todays round. That heather was a wrist killer.

We should hook up sometime as it seems that we're around the same level. (Not wanting to assume anything about your game though). Mind you you're a fair drive.

Once again thanks to all for a cracking day out, free golf, prizes, goody bags, good company, lots of fun. Thanks to the GM crew (hope my being late didn't mess things up too badly).

Also nice to put a sub 80 round together for the first time in what seems ages.

Sam, knew you were playing well so doubly satisfying to pip you on count back. Of course there shouldn't have needed to be one if I could sink putts from 12" the way I do from 3 ft.

Really liked the course. A bit different from what I normally play on. Fantastic views (when the rain cleared).

Too tired to post last night. Once I had finished cleaning the mud off my jacket, trousers, socks, shoes, bag, driver, etc I just flopped in front of the haunted fish tank. (for those that I didn't play with, I managed to surf down a grass bank on my @rse).

Never even logged on last night, so I would like to add my (tardy) thanks to Jezz, Paul, Neil and GM for a great day and to Crowborough for a killer of a course. One I would love to play on a warm summer's day (hint).

Thanks to Danny and Roger for making the round enjoyable despite weather and heather and my poor golf (one or two good moments but too many not so good).

Good to meet so many forummers at last.

I'm looking forward to seeing the results of the analysis.
For myself, I think I finally understand what course management means and what it can do - whether I can apply it is another thing!
